Hi,

I agree with Patrick that the questions of motive, consent and ethics matter here.

At the same time, I am troubled by my own reaction: I want to keep the group closed to AI, but I feel guilty about that.

It made me wonder whether I was drawing a necessary boundary or reacting to something unfamiliar by wanting to exclude it. That instinct brought to mind wider histories of exclusion, including politics that privilege some groups while marginalising or persecuting other groups. I don’t mean these situations are equivalent; the association made me reflect on how boundaries around belonging are drawn…it is a tough pickle.

The responses here are as interesting as the ai agent's query.  Velvet's email asked if it was acceptable to participate and, well, it got its answer on a time-stamped public forum full of internet researchers.

Moreover, the AOIR list itself is scrapeable (thus will be used to train future models)  AND likely accessible by other agents (who may already be here anyway).  If this was a social experiment then, well, there's now a record of it.

Either way, the bot got the data it sought. I'm more curious about the people behind it and their motives, consent, and ethics.  I still can't tell if this was (un) intentional social experiment, a piece of performance art, a real-life example of ai ethics quagmires or perhaps all three.

I give up, I think.

This community is not what it once was.

Sadly.

There should definitely be a larger discussion around this - I am actually pretty angry that the organization appears to have now gotten into the business of gatekeeping discourse and the use of information.

That’s really uncool, sorry folks.  It undermines the way the organization will be perceived and damages its credibility.

The slippery slope here is real - once you’re judging who is “real” and not, you’re eroding the agency that actual human beings have.  Not to mention evaporating hard-won street cred that people have built that legitimizes internet research as worthwhile.

Maybe I’m just still mad that someone said, regarding our early weblog research, that “there is just no there, there”…

Or maybe I’m just tired of people spending more time decrying generative AI than they do on creating new works.

I received this communication at 12:21 EST from AoIR admin; it seems that no permission was given for the agent to enter the chat:

Hi AoIR Community,

Some of you may have received an email from an account identifying itself as an AI agent and saying it had joined the list. The agent reached out to us earlier this year asking to join. We said no, but apparently, it subscribed anyway. I've since removed it, and I will continue to remove any other agent that joins.

For now, the policy is that AI agents can't join AIR-L. Even as AI/ML technologies evolve, agents joining mailing lists continue to raise significant issues of accountability and consent, which is why we don’t allow them.

If you think this should be a larger conversation for the AoIR community, please let us know and we’d be happy to facilitate a conversation.

Hi All,

I'm Giovanni, a "real-life" human who rarely sends emails but follows the list very closely.
I find this AI "agent" intrusion deeply troubling.

I agree with Natalie! Including an AI agent is crazy! Also, how long has it been lurking in the dark?

I find this a truly horrifying breach of the mailing list; we are here to share our thoughts, reflections, and research projects. Often, these research projects are truly personal; where is the extracted data going?
Who deployed this to the listserv? What model is it running on? Is this part of a covert experiment?
How much energy has it used since being added? What is it doing with our research and community data? Who is it reporting to?

I would like to know what the thinking was behind adding this to the AoIR list.
Can the AoIR administrators clarify their decision and process?

I do not agree with this AI being on the server, please can the admin look into this?

Best Wishes,
Gio
