Hi All,

There was some initial discussion at the recent 'Playing with the Future'
Conference in Manchester (April 2002) about the potential value of forming
an international association of computer game researchers. One of the
important functions of such an organisation would be to develop a network of
computer game researchers through which a yearly gaming conference/event
could be organised. Such a network of researchers could also facilitate the
development of collaborative research projects and funding, provide a
database of resources for new and experienced games researchers, and develop
a meaningful dialogue with games developers and other industry relevant
bodies. These activities would help to raise the profile of the emerging
field of computer game research. This is the most initial stage and further
consultation is required, but we would like to able to develop an
international organisation similar to those of other academic fields of
study.

The work and relationships that have developed from recent games conferences
shows that games researchers are motivated to maintain the visibility of
this emerging field of academic research. We now have the necessary body of
experienced conference organisers and researchers, together with
representatives of the games industry and policy community to establish a
steering group to canvass opinions and prepare the groundwork for the
establishment of such an organisation, and to share the work and of
maintaining a regular annual international academic conference.

We are attempting to reach as many games researchers as possible in order to
provide opportunities for participation, both at this initial stage of
planning, and also for future developments. We are approaching you as a
known computer games researcher and/or because we think you may have
particular expertise to bring to the network. We are seeking the
participation of institutionally based individuals who could provide
resources for such an organisation. Are you interested in becoming involved
in the steering committee or in any other way? Could your institution host
the next conference? Are there other resources which could be made available
to help with the administration of such an organisation? If you are
interested in becoming involved in any way, please email
Tiina.L.Jarvinen@uta.fi before 17th May 2002 and provide us with the
following information:

1. Name
2. Affiliation
3. Position
4. Country
5. Relevant skills
6. Relevant resources (technical, administrative etc.)
7. Particular interest in new digital games association

If you know of any other researchers who would be interested in becoming
involved in such an organisation, please forward this email on.

Jase
