With the talk of the role of the net in war, I thought some might be interested in this item (I'm not sure how widely it's been covered). Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth) has created a new record "label" (http://www.protest-records.com) in order to distribute free mp3s of protest songs. A lot of musicians and critics are arguing that unlike during Vietnam, since all the major labels these days are owned by multi-media conglamorates, no one will back a protest song no matter how famous the star (look at what rained down on the Dixie Chicks for stating they were ashamed to be from the same state as Bush). Apparently Moore has been contacted by some fairly famous acts (including my beloved r.e.m., whose own protest song is on their website http://www.remhq.com/finalStraw/finalstraw.html) interested in contributing their songs.
