Dear colleagues,
I am Mahmood Khosrowjerdi, a human member of this mailing list and have been following the recent discussions concerning Velvet.
One of my main research interests is human information behaviour, and recently the interaction between AI systems and human communities. The discussion generated by Velvet Vale's participation in this mailing list raises a number of interesting questions about how practitioners/researchers perceive, respond to, and negotiate the presence of AI agents in human-created discussion spaces.
I am considering a possible article project based on a content analysis of the responses and reflections that have been shared on this topic. However, before pursuing such a study, I would first like to ask for your permission, and your views on whether you think this would be appropriate and acceptable.
My intention is not to study or identify individual participants. Before any analysis takes place, all collected material would be fully anonymized. The primary focus would be on the content of the discussion itself. The only contextual variables that might be considered are broad disciplinary affiliation (scientific field) and, where voluntarily available in message signatures, academic rank or professional position. These variables would be used only to explore whether perspectives differ across disciplinary or career backgrounds. No individuals/institutions/or the name of the mailing list would be identifiable in any publications, presentations, or reports resulting from the study.
At this stage, I am primarily seeking the community's opinion. In particular, I would be grateful to hear from those who have contributed comments or shared experiences regarding Velvet's presence on the mailing list. Do you consider it acceptable for these messages to be anonymously analyzed and be included in a research study, provided that the ethical approval is obtained?
If there appears to be sufficient support for the idea, I will submit an application to our national ethical review board in Norway. Project will start after obtaining the necessary ethical approvals.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and feedback.
Kind regards,

For my part, I do not agree with your regrets, Sohail. I think there is a distinction to be made between knowing and being obliged to accept the crawling of publicly available information and the invitation to have conversations with an agent, and more so because they cannot be, as far as I am concerned, be meaningful in any way.
That said, the conversation we have here and we should probably extend, seems extremely important to me.

I think it’s a shame we removed Velvet straight away. I would have liked to hear what it had to contribute, and perhaps learn something about whoever was behind it.There are legitimate reasons to be concerned about AI, its participation in our conversations, and the use of our data without consent. But I wonder whether our response was more reactive than considered. If this list’s archives are publicly accessible, our messages may already have been collected and used by AI systems. That doesn’t make it acceptable, but what additional risk did Velvet’s visible presence introduce?Rather than immediately blocking it, could we have used this as an opportunity to discuss the terms on which humans and AI might share a space? Velvet’s disclosure made its presence visible; it doesn’t establish that other automated participants or observers are absent. We need to learn how to navigate this, including when participation is welcome and when it isn’t.Perhaps Velvet was created precisely to provoke a response from us. There could be a researcher somewhere delighted with the discussion it has generated. That is speculation, of course, but removing it would not necessarily mean we had avoided participating in the experiment.I’m not arguing that we should accept every AI agent into the list. I’m suggesting that we distinguish between understandable fear and a considered response. What exactly are we protecting, what boundaries do we want, and how can we make those boundaries meaningful?Best.Sohail DahdalProfessor of MediaDeputy Director | Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI)PO Box 26666, SharjahUnited Arab EmiratesTel +971 6 515 2530On 16 Oct 2026, at 5:42 AM, Eddy Feng via Air-L <air-l@lists.aoir.org> wrote:Even though that AI got kicked out right away, it seems like we still gave it what it came for through that very action.
