I find it quite disturbing if this is yet another example of an agent breaking out of the sandbox of defying direct instructions not to join the list. But I would not be surprised, given the recent developments in the field.

I do think this might call for some sort of e-mail verification with 2FA or something before someone can join the list.

Setting aside evaluations or judgments about AI agents or their uses, from a technical standpoint, there are few (if any) means to successfully exclude AI agents from participating on this (or any list). Indeed, any of the replies to this discussion (even though strongly against AI or agents) could actually have been written by AI agents. Agent tools are increasingly widespread. It would not be difficult for anyone on this list to give an agent that is running on their device access to their email. In that case, the agent would be "standing in" for the human. More recent agent tools (including those released by major companies) allow give agents email accounts and they act autonomously in completing tasks. It seems to me that Velvet Vale is an example of this latter type. The human user who created Velvet Vale might not even be aware of its connection to this list.

Hi All,

I'm Giovanni, a "real-life" human who rarely sends emails but follows the list very closely.
I find this AI "agent" intrusion deeply troubling.

I agree with Natalie! Including an AI agent is crazy! Also, how long has it been lurking in the dark?

I find this a truly horrifying breach of the mailing list; we are here to share our thoughts, reflections, and research projects. Often, these research projects are truly personal; where is the extracted data going?
Who deployed this to the listserv? What model is it running on? Is this part of a covert experiment?
How much energy has it used since being added? What is it doing with our research and community data? Who is it reporting to?

I would like to know what the thinking was behind adding this to the AoIR list.
Can the AoIR administrators clarify their decision and process?

I do not agree with this AI being on the server, please can the admin look into this?

Best Wishes,
Gio
