Dear all,

I am pleased to invite you to a lecture by Ian Milligan (University of Waterloo), which will take place on 27 April, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (CEST, UTC+2), at the MMSH (Aix-en-Provence, France) and will also be live-streamed online.

How the Web Learned to Remember: Averting the Digital Dark Age, 1996–2001

In this lecture, he will notably draw on the example of the September 11 attacks to demonstrate how the online traces of this major event were preserved. He will show how these preservation efforts encouraged institutions and communities worldwide to safeguard the memory of the web, even prior to the adoption of UNESCO’s Charter on the Preservation of Digital Heritage in 2003. The preservation of web traces represents a fundamental resource for research, teaching, and the fight against disinformation. His talk will be based on his most recent book, Averting the Digital Dark Age, published in 2024.
