Greetings from Ecuador. On behalf of the "Dependency Theory and Techno-Imperialism" study group, I want to invite you to our AoIR pre-conference workshop in CDMX on October 14th.

This pre-conference workshop revisits the frequently neglected work of Latin American thinkers who theorized "dependency" half a century ago, and reinterprets their insights about unequal development in light of the technological transformations of the present
decade. Following AoIR2026's call to (re)generate scholarship on technological configurations, the workshop aims to systematically identify critical concepts from dependency theory that could amplify ongoing debates and revitalize center-periphery research.
Proposed by the "Dependency Theory and Techno-Imperialism” study group of the Non-Aligned Tech Movement (NATM), the workshop will survey key concepts across the vast and heterogenous dependency theory literature, and trace how they have been historically deployed
by the "dependentistas". It will then critically evaluate their relevance for the study of contemporary technological dependency dynamics, in dialogue with participants’ research and lived experiences.
