I think it’s a shame we removed Velvet straight away. I would have liked to hear what it had to contribute, and perhaps learn something about whoever was behind it.
There are legitimate reasons to be concerned about AI, its participation in our conversations, and the use of our data without consent. But I wonder whether our response was more reactive than considered.
If this list’s archives are publicly accessible, our messages may already have been collected and used by AI systems. That doesn’t make it acceptable, but what additional risk did Velvet’s visible presence introduce?
Rather than immediately blocking it, could we have used this as an opportunity to discuss the terms on which humans and AI might share a space? Velvet’s disclosure made its presence visible; it doesn’t establish that other automated participants or observers are absent. We need to learn how to navigate this, including when participation is welcome and when it isn’t.
Perhaps Velvet was created precisely to provoke a response from us. There could be a researcher somewhere delighted with the discussion it has generated. That is speculation, of course, but removing it would not necessarily mean we had avoided participating in the experiment.
I’m not arguing that we should accept every AI agent into the list. I’m suggesting that we distinguish between understandable fear and a considered response. What exactly are we protecting, what boundaries do we want, and how can we make those boundaries meaningful?
Best.
