Re: Air-l digest, Vol 1 #863 - 3 msgs
Dear Colleagues Could you PLEASE refrain from sending messages in both text and html and stick to the basic rule, text or ascii, only unless there is no way to escape html! The size of the above quoted digest was roughly triplicated by html garbage brought by 2 messages. This is particularly "pleasant" when one travels and relies upon cibercafes or hotel access. Thank you in advance Best regards Michel Friday, October 17, 2003, 6:01:03 PM, you wrote: alrao> Send Air-l mailing list submissions to alrao> air-l@aoir.org alrao> To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit alrao> http://www.aoir.org/mailman/listinfo/air-l alrao> or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to alrao> air-l-request@aoir.org alrao> You can reach the person managing the list at alrao> air-l-admin@aoir.org alrao> When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific alrao> than "Re: Contents of Air-l digest..." alrao> Today's Topics: alrao> 1. just yesterday i upgraded mailman (the software that runs air-l) to a more recent version for another site. one of the features introduced in newer versions is the automatic translation of HTML messages to plain text. after 24 hours of heavy use (IBM Thinkpad mailing list, thinkpad@stderr.org ) I can say with some certainty that it works very well and effectively eliminates badly encoded HTML messages sent to the list at large. perhaps we can beg the folks hosting AoIR.org to upgrade Mailman as well? :) elijah
When there is some time available in my schedule I will upgrade mailman, however, unsurprisingly, an upgrade of mailman requires an upgrade of python, which requires an upgrade of gcc which requires and upgrade of glibc, and well that could incur the wrath of the solaris gods, and on a stable system that would be less than ideal. the best way to solve this, as I've said more times than is really warranted, is for people to turn of html email, there is nothing 'good' about html email that outweighs its 'bads' which include propagation of virus's, unreadable email, spam, etc.

exactly. elijah
I wholeheartedly support the request by michel, jeremy, and many others that people send their messages in plain text only, not in HTML or plain text and HTML. For those who are unsure how to change their mail programs to plain text, there's a rather useful file that should help. It provides instructions for dozens of programs and versions (just scroll down): http://www.expita.com/nomime.html .
