Need help: virtual worlds and games grass-root rebellions
Dear AoIR-lers: I need some help. I was invited to participate in a conference for games developers and multimedia artist, and I´m thinking to talk about user´s rebellions in online games and virtual worlds. Reading the Celia Pearce´s book "Communities of play" (excellent reading) I found a mention of a WoW rebellion, in 2004. Can you suggest me some other readings about this kind of grass-root protest movements? Also any pictures? Thank you very much =) Alejandro Tortolini Science and technology journalist - Teacher Buenos Aires, Argentina Contact Me [image: LinkedIn] <http://ar.linkedin.com/in/alejandrotortolini> [image: Twitter] <http://twitter.com/aletorto> Chat [image: Skype/] aletor2 Signature powered by <http://www.wisestamp.com/email-install?utm_source=extension&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=footer> WiseStamp<http://www.wisestamp.com/email-install?utm_source=extension&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=footer>
Hi Alejandro, Second Life users had protested the increase in taxes in SL its early years. Can't remember the details but I can dig something out if you like... I think Wired was mentioning the incident in its coverage of SL. Hope this helps.. Burcu -- Thanks,</burcu> Burcu S. All, Pearce is talking about a 2005 "Warrior Protest" within World of Warcraft. The rebellion in question is documented as part of T.L. Taylor's article on MMO player managment and game design in First Monday. Here's the link to the article: http://firstmonday.org/htbin/cgiwrap/bin/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/1611/... Talyor provides a link to screen shots of the protest within the article as well. You might want to look into "sit outs" by online poker players to protest poker sites that increase fees. I've heard of this recently happening on the French version of PokerStars to protest increased rake & taxes. Hi Alejandro, There have been several protests in Second Life that might be of interest to you. 1) Protests against Linden Labs Recently there have been several protests against the Adult Content Change. See for instance: http://bdsm-lifenewsletter.blogspot.com/2009/05/newsletter-for-bdsm-life-in-... There has been a protest against the introduction of voice in SL by transgender groups. Unfortunately I can’t find the info on the web right now. But there is a nice machinima on youtube about it. The Sl Rights and Politics website lists several in-world protests like the "BDSM is Safe - BDSM is not Abuse" group that had billboards all over SL. See: http://www.fetishscene.com/second-life/politics.html 2) Protest against sexual content Sims with extreme sexual content, like The Hard Alley sim: http://alphavilleherald.com/2009/11/a-view-from-the-back-the-hard-alley-prot... 3) Political protest on RL issue Of a different kind has been the IBM protest where IBM's islands were occupied: http://www.union-network.org/UNIInDep.nsf/By+Date/FF74A384CEF4EE82C12573DA00... Mail me off-list if you want more information or the URL of the voice protest machinima on Youtube. Tjarda Tjarda Sixma MA sixma.vijselaar@planet.nl
