Well, let's please consider civility here and the fact that people often find themselves working in political environments which they did not create/endorse. How would we have felt if someone had said, in response to a friendly circulation of a job ad at our university, that no one "of quality" would work for a public university in a country that would elect Trump? Thank you! As someone who has been in the South for a decade (PhD at GA tech, now at a public SLAC in SC) I get so tired of hearing people write off the South as some kind of political wasteland when it’s full of people of color and urban centers having their votes suppressed. Look at GA. Not to mention the vital legacy and current culture of resistance to fascism and white supremacy in the South which brings conversations about race and racism into everyday discourse in ways that people in other parts of the country (like the NE, where I’m from) rarely engage with as openly and directly. The South is politically complex, like every region, but if you write it off because of right wing politics, where does that leave all the people who are working to resist? I wish people would read carefully before firing off defensive emails. Here is what I said: *I’m sorry, but I can’t imagine anyone of quality applying to a public institution in a state with a failed Trumpster press secretary as a governor.* I didn't say anything about any faculty currently working in Arkansas - whether it was their research, teaching or character. I said that I could not imagine anyone of quality applying to a public institution in a state with a failed Trumpster press secretary as a governor. First, I said "applying" - referring to a *future act*. Second, I specified a "public institution" - referring to a place of employment where a governor can have *direct power*. Third, I stated "with a failed Trumpster press secretary as governor" - referring to *exactly one person, Sarah Huckabee Sanders*. She doesn't take office until January -- another fact that demonstrates that I was not talking about anyone currently on a faculty. Sanders is promising to be another DeSantis when it comes to education - working to turn Arkansas' educational system into the envy of nobody. So, yes, I can't think of anyone of quality who would want to apply to a system that is doomed to decline significantly in quality. I would also appreciate that you read carefully before sending unwarranted criticisms. Rod Rod On Mon, Nov 14, 2022 at 7:05 PM Sarah Schoemann <sarah.schoemann@gmail.com> wrote:

An added note here: I’ve been looking for applied work for 5 years since I graduated. I have decades of experience in tech, plus a “new” applied research doctorate. It has taken me so long because I am trying to work for a place that doesn’t harm people. Those places pretty much don’t exist. Every entity harms in one way or another, you just have to figure out what you can live with. My lesson: if you try to work somewhere ethical, you may gain principles, but still go hungry. I hope you find some great candidates, Steph. -Sally

As someone working in one of the states with difficult political environment, I can tell we are in dire need of someone of quality who is willing to fight with us and protect our students from the severe environment. This conversation made me think of my role as an educator and where I should stand strong. While I respect others' choices including Rod's, I choose to stay here to fight, and welcome future colleagues who will stand for our young generation. Good luck with your search! Stay strong all. Rod, I think it's the "of quality" part that was most insulting and whether you meant it in future, past, or present tense is irrelevant. It came across as suggesting only those scholars of lower or no quality would apply for that job. The unfortunate truth in the US is that the number of states with draconian policies and/or governments outnumbers those actually governing in their citizens' best interests. It is also true that there are some excellent institutions with world-renowned faculty in those more regressive states. In academia we're told to go where the jobs are and, sometimes, we must choose between unemployment or a state governed by Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Ultimately, though, as Dawn asked earlier, what was the purpose of your message? I hope you can see how it may have insulted those of us in states where Trumpism is the law of the land. I write this from Tennessee, where abortion is now illegal, yet we continue to attract candidates "of quality" who would enjoy less reproductive rights here than they do in some of the states they are coming from. --Guy Written from my iPhone. Several people off-list have offered unsolicited advice about how I should have written my post or how I should write my next ones. Please don't be offended if I don't take you up on your advice. I made a comment about how I believed the quality of the pool of applicants to a state about to be governed by an unqualified Trumpster - and a person who is supportive of the destructive policies toward education seen in several other states - would be lessened. I said nothing about the quality of people who teach in the Arkansas system now, and I did not tell applicants not to apply. I am not sorry about my comment. I am baffled that so many people decided to take offense. I am done with my participation in this thread, and responding to the "advice" I have been given. Rod,
I think it's the "of quality" part that was most insulting and whether you meant it in future, past, or present tense is irrelevant.

One small correction, Dr. Ndinojuo. Sarah Huckabee Sanders was not working for Trump. She was working for the American people and she failed to do her job. In fact, she lied to us while doing her job.

I’ve been looking for applied work for 5 years since I graduated.

As someone who is in desperate need of a full-time job, it’s hard to imagine that someone would dismiss the potential positives of full-time employment regardless of where it is located.

One small correction, Dr. Ndinojuo. Sarah Huckabee Sanders was not working for Trump. She was working for the American people and she failed to do her job. In fact, she lied to us while doing her job.

I’ve never gotten into a listserve debate before but the amount of liberal smugness on one hand (who calls out a job ad in this market damn) and liberal complicity on the other— there is a difference between teaching under difficult conditions and In solidarity with those opposed to and oppressed by it and working for the people actually doing the oppression Cat On Tue, 15 Nov 2022 at 03:03, Ben-Collins Ndinojuo via Air-L < air-l@listserv.aoir.org> wrote:

I’ve been looking for applied work for 5 years since I graduated.

Dear all, First time Air-L poster (I think), longtime lurker here. Hi yall! Just wanted to make sure the original message of the thread is not lost: *A huge +1 to Steph’s dept* I visited the Depart of Communication at U of Arkansas and these qualities need not be imagined: 1. The department faculty has intellectual courage, breadth, and strength, and is well positioned on campus. The call is evidence of that. Steph would be a huge win as a mentor and colleague in any department in the world and Comm at Arkansas has a deep faculty bench of excellent peers. The students also struck me as interesting and eager, and the campus faculty broadly excellent and open to interdisciplinary work. 2. Hilary Rodham Clinton has a long-standing reading group in the city. Local and regional politics need not yet be overdetermined. 3. The city itself is livable, lovable, and often gorgeous—in many ways the quintessentially postcard college town with lots of bookstores, (often generously Wal-Martian funded), art museums, cafes, and insanely beautiful rolling hills that burn bright in the autumnal blush. 4. Were I more junior, I would imagine applying in a heartbeat: I hope others feel encouraged to do the same. Thanks for modeling all the insights and civility, y’all: Steph’s corner is the real deal, Mit freundlichen Grüßen aus Aachen, Ben https://khk.rwth-aachen.de/prof-benjamin-peters/ Sent from my iPhone
