Postdoctoral position at the University of Michigan [critical algorithm studies, cscw, social computing]
Hi everyone, I have an opening for a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan School of Information. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Details about the position here: https://careers.umich.edu/job_detail/226474/research-fellow <https://careers.umich.edu/job_detail/226474/research-fellow> Summary excerpt from the job posting: The University of Michigan School of Information seeks to hire a postdoctoral scholar to conduct research in social computing and critical algorithm studies. The desired start date is flexible, but will be sometime between January - September 2023. This scholar will work closely with Dr. Nazanin Andalibi at the University of Michigan School of Information’s Marginality in Sociotechnical Systems (MiSTS) research group. Andalibi and the fellow will decide on projects the fellow will collaborate on together, but the projects would need to align with MiSTS’s overall theme and be of interest to both the fellow and Andalibi. Our projects span (emotion) AI’s justice, social, and ethical implications across a range of high stakes contexts (e.g., work, education, mental health), social media’s (including algorithms’) roles in (de)marginalization processes, and ways to resist and combat sociotechnical marginalization/harms across diverse contexts (e.g., social media, algorithmic systems). Overall, there is some flexibility on the projects the fellow engages in as long as the team is well-suited to carry out the work with the highest caliber. The ideal candidate will have experience with both qualitative and quantitative methods (qualitative is a must) and be able to lead research studies from start (conception) to finish (publicizing, publication), while also work collaboratively and effectively in teams. Research work will include designing studies, submitting IRB applications, collecting data, analyzing data, conducting literature reviews, and writing up academic publications. Other responsibilities may include assisting in writing grant applications; coordinating and running meetings with partners; preparing reports/presentations; mentoring PhD, master’s, and undergraduate students; providing feedback on others’ projects; and collaborating on projects others lead. The fellow will have opportunities to engage with other research groups, centers, and institutions such as the Digital Studies Institute, the Center for Social Media Responsibility, and the Center for Ethics, Society, and Computing depending on their interests and goals. Note: This is a one-year appointment renewable up to one additional year, pending satisfactory job performance which the PI and fellow will evaluate together periodically.
