Re: [Air-L] Research
A good place to start would be this: Ess, C. & AoIR ethics working committee, 2002. Ethical decision-making and Internet research: Recommendations from the aoir ethics working committee, Available at: www.aoir.org/reports/ethics.pdf [Accessed March 7, 2008]. The ethics of online research has often been debated on this list, if you search the archives you may find answers to some of your questions. My IRB is currently unsure about the types of consent I should obtain from these young people and whether parental consent must be obtained and how I would go about collecting those signatures. I would like to work with 14-17 year olds from different geographic areas, so face to face interviews would be a challenge. Any advice? Thank you in advance
Just a note to add to the conversation, you can and should apply for a waiver from parental consent. The basic intent of parental consent is that you get the parents consent before you contact the kids. Of course in internet research this model is an impossible one as we usually discover the kids first and can only contact the parents through the kids. Once upon a time this process was difficult for some IRBs to understand but not now when there has been quite a bit written on the topic...including the CITI module on internet research which suggests that "consent" processes should be waived for online research since we can't be sure who is on the other end.
