Dear fellow researchers, May 13, 2003 I am working with a graduate student this summer on a project involving children's web sites (sites whose prime intended audience = children). She is interested in doing some content analysis of such sites. My question is: what software do you recommend for such a project? I think she is interested primarily in text, but might also look at photos/graphics, etc. On a more general level, I tend to work with Macs. Are there Mac content analysis programs for other projects (notably news stories and newscast script) and how do these compare to Windows-based programs--or even old ASCII/DOS driven programs like VBPro? --Mark Harmon Mark D. Mark, As a start, you might want to investigate TamsAnalyzer http://educ.kent.edu/~mweinste/tams/software.html as a vehicle for qualitative analysis of text-based information. The application, which runs under Mac OS X is available as a free download from sites such as http://www.macupdate.com As TAMS works with text-based documents, procedurally it should be possible to reveal web pages as text (using a web browser's view|source menu function), saving the page as text, then using TamsAnalyzer to identify unique and mutually exclusive categories for content analysis. You might want to check out the N6 program that used to be called NUD*IST which many people use for qualitative analysis.
