Facebook Group Research & Tools
All, I'm working with a group of Master's students who are beginning a study examining the messages posted to a large, active Facebook group. First, is there any "must have" literature focusing specifically on Facebook groups? I'm well-versed in the broader Facebook and college student technology use literature but I'm not aware of any good studies in this specific area so your guidance would be appreciated. Second, are there any tools that automate or make it easy to download messages posted to a Facebook group? I'm helping these students search for any relevant tools but it's difficult because the space is extremely crowded with SEO and marketing "tools" and "research." Kevin
Kevin, You might check out Mascaro and Goggin's work on political discourse in the Facebook tea party group. I don't have a copy of them on hand but... Mascaro, C. and Goggins, S. (2011). Brewing up Citizen Engagement: The Coffee Party on Facebook. Communities & Technologies 2011, June 29 – July 2, 2011. Brisbane, Australia. Mascaro, C., Novak, A. & Goggins, S. (2011). Shepherding and Censorship: Discourse Management in the Tea Party Patriots Facebook Group. HICSS, E-Government Track. Andrea On 9/14/11 1:30 PM, Kevin Guidry wrote:

This may be too far afield from what you mean by "must-have" literature - but the recent publication _ Facebook and Philosophy_, edited by D.E. Wittkower (in the "Popular Culture and Philosophy Series" by Open Court) has a number of first-rate essays that provide a range of perspectives (from very supportive to very critical) re. issues of privacy, the nature of friendship online, social networking, identity, etc. Not every essay is as good as the best ones - but the best ones are very useful indeed for providing critical but balanced and philosophically well-informed analyses and insights. While these may not directly help with research per se, they might well help in shaping research questions in useful ways, especially as they challenge prevailing stereotypes, etc. In any event - good luck! - Charles Ess Institut for Informations- og Medievidenskab Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Århus N.
