The newly formed Department, which becomes official in July 2002, brings together the University of Washington's School of Communications and the Department of Speech Communication. The new Department's mission is to advance the study and practice of communication across diverse contexts by using both humanistic and social scientific approaches. The four core principles that guide the Department's graduate program are intellectual and cultural pluralism, interdisciplinary theorizing, innovation through collaboration, and public scholarship. Currently, the Department seeks scholars who study any of the following: interpersonal interaction in face-to-face or on-line settings; political, cultural, or economic implications of new communication technologies; communication among nations, cultures, and social groups in increasingly diverse global environments. The Department has a special interest in scholars whose research incorporates the experiences of indigenous cultures or underrepresented populations. Strong candidates for these positions will have the ability to sustain a high-quality program of research and teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Candidates must have earned or be close to completion of a Ph.D. by September 16, 2002, which is the start date for the positions.
