cfp; disagree with James Whyte (and who?)
1. I disagree strongly with James Whyte, that we should segregate calls for proposals, conferences, etc from this list. I daresay that it is the lifeblood of this list for many scholars and important for most of the rest. Indeed, as this is AoiResearchers, calls for publishing such research is part of what distinguishes us from uninformed talkers. 2. James Whyte's request (and frequent posts) have made me (and some others) wonder: who is James Whyte? Almost all posters to this list anchor themselves institutionally thru their e-address or their sig. But I cannot find such in Mr. Whyte's posting. And a quick check of the 20 items in Google scholar wasn't useful, as "James Whyte" is more common than "Barry Wellman" "Charles Ess" etc. G.Scholar came up with a variety of James Whyte's. So James Whyte, in view of your frequent posts, I (and I think some others) would appreciate knowing more about you, in order to put your comments in context. This has been discussed as long as I've been a part of AIR. It's almost a tradition. Despite this, I can't find the discussion on the AIR-L list so, to agree strongly with Barry: Given our undisciplined nature (avoiding two recent threads about disciplinarity and what's in a name, I prefer to think of us as an "undiscipine,") I think its especially worth mixing our meta with our discourse. Plus, a good call is sometimes cause for discussion in itself.

My comment about this subject was not an opinion nor a proposal, it was simply an observation. I also agreed with you on the result of greater participation. I don't know how a person can disagree with an observation or agreement. In fact I think I gave homage to You will not likely find me In any "scholarly" publication because I was an IT practitioner for 35 years and retired. In my world I had no need to publish and was, in fact, discouraged from doing so. My experience is more akin to information architecture than the social pursuits of this community. To that end my comments can only be considered as speculations Am I to understand that if you do not appear in Gogle Scholar you have no voice in this list? If my agreement offended I apologize. If it is inappropriate to comment I will lurk. I think I made my intent in joining the list clear to the moderator. I do appreciate the capital of this culture. I didn't read anything in Prof. Wellman's comment that would indicate one doesn't have a "voice" if not in Google Scholar - just that he couldn't discern any identifiable information from that source from which to contextualize your contributions. -mz ----- Michael T.
