Hello everyone- Sorry about the slight OTness but I missed a book order deadline this week so I'm in a bit of a panic. I'm slated to teach Gender Communication next semester as an upper level undergraduate course, and it hasn't been taught here in so long the bookstore has no record of the last textbook used. I'd like to approach this by including some new media/online stuff since a lot has been written about gender dynamics in online spaces. At the least I want a recently updated textbook. If anyone has recommendations for textbooks or supplemental books I'd appreciate it. Copies of syllabi would also be welcome. stuszyns@bethanywv.edu Cheers. Dr. Stephanie Tuszynski Assistant Professor of Communication Bethany College

As additional readings...maybe Dr. Tannen's texts: You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation Talking from 9 to 5: Women and Men at Work JW -- ====================================================================== John B. Tannen's work has been thoroughly discredited regarding its lack of evidence. See: Goldsmith, D. J., & Fulfs, P. A. (1999). "You just don't have the evidence": An analysis of claims and evidence in Deborah Tannen's You just don't understand. In M. E. Roloff (Ed.), Communication yearbook 22 (pp. 1-49). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage. It is also thoroughly confused--she vacillates between saying that men and women differ in their focus on negative vs. positive face and saying that they differ in terms of how they communicate regardless of focus. To see how shaky her logic and evidence is, see her film "He said, she said" in which she presents both claims just mentioned in rapid succession and also presents video taped "evidence" for her positions that actually seem to show the opposite of what she claims they do. --Christian Nelson On Oct 18, 2008, at 6:12 PM, John B. If you don't mind me doing some self promotion i edited a journal issue on gender and communication on an internet mailing list last year, and if the articles are not of interest then the reference lists to them might be - and of course you don't have to get the students to buy the book :) see http://epress.lib.uts.edu.au/ojs/index.php/TfC/issue/view/40/showToc jon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tuszynski, Stephanie" <stuszyns@bethanywv.edu> Date: Saturday, October 18, 2008 1:32 am Subject: [Air-L] OT request: Gender Communication textbooks? Hi all! I am looking for literature on social network sites and politics (election, voting, activism, access to politics information, political process, etc.) as part of a project we're starting here at MSU. Work that looks specifically at SNSs (as opposed to the Internet in general) would be especially helpful. Although academic research is preferable, well-done popular press references are also welcome. I'm happy to summarize and re-post to the list. Thanks much! Nicole
Take a look at Christine Williams and Jeff Gulati's research. http://blogsandwikis.bentley.edu/politechmedia/ -----Original Message----- From: air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org [mailto:air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org] On Behalf Of Nicole B Ellison Sent: Sunday, October 19, 2008 9:57 AM To: air-l@listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] Looking for lit on SNSs and politicals Hi all! Hello everyone- Sorry about the slight OTness but I missed a book order deadline this week so I'm in a bit of a panic. Same for me. I have a new CMC class to teach in the spring. I used Thurlow's textbook in prior years, but I would prefer working from books that are more fun to read - Smart Mobs, The World is Flat and Web 2.0 Heroes are on my list. What other books or sites are excellent for CMC and web 2.0 CMC. Alex Randall Prof of Communication Univ of the Virgin Islands arandal@uvi.edu
