Re: [Air-l] Student peer-to-peer infiltration
If he owns the copyright to the music, then it seems it would be perfectly legit for him to upload it and track who downloads it. No backdoor necessary. It he does not own the copyright, then it would seem to be a breach of the rules to make it publicly available, and I would not like to have to get the project through the ethics process at my institution. holly-kruse@utulsa.edu 09/04/03 07:46am >>> I'm the advisor for an undergraduate student who, as his senior project, is going to record a CD with his band. But beyond that, to make it senior project-worthy, he wants to infiltrate a peer-to-peer network through a backdoor with MP3s of the music and track how much it gets downloaded.
He is very excited about this, and I'm excited that he's excited, but I also don't want to be presiding over a senior project that creates ethical problems, especially at the institutional level. Any thoughts on this: whether this project seems totally kosher, whether it should be re-tooled and how, etc.? TIA, Holly ----- Holly Kruse Faculty of Communication University of Tulsa 600 S. With reference to the peer-to-peer music sharing debate and related issues, anyone doing research on online music and media would probably find the pho mailing list interesting: Pho is a fascinating community comprising over one thousand members from the media industries, law, government, academia, and the arts, debating issues related to 'the digital delivery of art'. http://www.pholist.org From the site: *Pho is Vietnamese beef noodle soup.* It is also a *community* that *gathers* over soup *to share ideas* about "the digital delivery of art" and "the convergence of entertainment and technology." Discussions take place at gatherings in Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis, Chicago, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, San Jose, Nashville, Seattle, Portland, London and Moscow and beyond. Our conversations continue online via The Pho List. -- John von Seggern producer remixer DJ Los Angeles Digital Cutup Lounge <http://www.digitalcutuplounge.us> film and TV scoring with Terra Incognito <http://www.terra-incognito.us>
Hi Marj: I've passed your message on to the student, and it should give him something to think about and discuss with me! Thanks so much. I'm not sure why he was/is insistent on using a backdoor and wouldn't want to do this upfront. I hope to find out in our next meeting... Thanks again, Holly -- Holly Kruse Faculty of Communication University of Tulsa 600 S. College Ave. Tulsa, OK 74104 918-631-3845 holly-kruse@utulsa.edu
