New Article: How Social Media's Incentives Drove the Discord Leaks
Dear Friends and Colleagues, Just sharing with you a new article I've just published today on Tech Policy Press, 'How Social Media Incentives Helped Drive the Discord Leaks <https://techpolicy.press/how-social-media-incentives-helped-drive-the-discord-leaks/> .' In this latest episode in my analysis on Jack Teixeira, the Discord Leaker, I do a deep dive into the ways in which social media specifically encourages self-interested national security leaks like this and the role they play in fueling conspiracy theory driven far-right politics. It argues social media wasn’t just a vector distributing the leak, but may have escalated Teixeira’s behavior, increasing the leak's impact. I detail important reforms that are needed to stop this recurring. (This latest piece also follows my recent article for SpyTalk <https://www.spytalk.co/p/the-air-force-loves-war-gamers-like>, which critiqued the AI 'insider threat' systems that failed, and revealed that the US military itself encouraged its young recruits into gaming communities on an app that's a playground for white nationalist extremists.) Thank you for taking a look.
