It conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research in the areas of U.S. politics and policy views; media and journalism; internet and technology; religion and public life; science and society; race and ethnicity; global attitudes; and U.S. social and demographic trends. Pew Research does not take policy positions. It is a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts. Pew Research Center’s work is carried out by a staff of approximately 170 based in Washington, DC. Staff may work virtually from remote locations up to four days per week and are required to be present in the Center’s office at 1615 L Street NW at least one day per week. Position Description Pew Research Center is looking for an Associate Director for its Internet and Technology team. The Associate Director oversees a research team produces reports exploring the impact of the internet and technology on families, communities, work and home, daily life, education, health care, and civic and political life. Key topics include: technology use, social networking and social media, mobile connectivity, and digitally-relevant policy issues such as privacy, cybersecurity and harassment.. The team employs multiple methodologies to conduct this research, including survey research, computational social science and content analysis. The Associate Director will conceptualize research products and manage day-to-day operations, including questionnaire development, translation, quality control, data analysis, writing and number checking. The Associate Director will also serve as a spokesperson for the Center’s research in their subject areas and assist with writing components of grant applications. Reporting to Director, Internet and Technology, the Associate Director will model best practices in collaboration across teams, as well as in creating systems and processes that help produce the best possible products. Responsibilities - Manage development and execution of original research focused on internet and technology - Manage team day-to-day operations planning, editorial calendars, production calendars and staff assignments to projects - Provide editorial direction by identifying storylines - Supervise team members by providing regular feedback and comfortably addressing performance issues - Contribute to writing grant proposals and meeting grant-reporting requirements - Act as a spokesperson for the team’s research - Take an institutional role in setting the research agenda and contribute to management and culture building across the Center as a whole - Work with the Center’s communications team to ensure that the work meets the needs of, and is accessible to, the Center’s priority audiences - Work with the Center’s methods team to ensure that the Center’s survey research meets the highest methodological standards - Ensure accuracy, impartiality, clarity and methodological transparency in all research products Knowledge and Skills Required - Must have a passion for the mission of a non-advocacy organization that conducts high-quality social science research and reports its findings in impartial, clear and accessible ways - Demonstrated success in project management along with maturity, independence and time management skills to work effectively with little or no day-to-day supervision - Dedicated to the highest principles of transparency and accountability - Excellent writing and speaking skills - Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with direct reports, peers and managers - Strong inter-personal skills to relate effectively to staff at all levels - Strong collaboration skills Education/Training/Experience - MA required, PhD preferred. 15+ years of research experience, with a minimum of 10 years of specialized experience in research and analysis - Demonstrated subject matter expertise on how digital technologies are impacting people’s social, political and economic lives, including deep understanding of fast-moving topics like artificial intelligence. Advanced skills in quantitative data analysis - Proven ability to write clear, compelling and accessible reports on quantitative research - Successful experience leading small teams, mentoring others and giving feedback FLSA Status: Exempt This position typically starts at $144,000 per year. Location Pew Research Center staff may work virtually from remote locations up to four days in a standard work week. Staff are required to be present in the Center’s Washington, D.C., office on at least one of two core days weekly (Tues., Wed.) and one Thursday a month for an all-staff day.
