For a historical chapter about the Internet that I'm co-writing, I'd appreciate knowing: 1. Does Yahoo's portal-based directory service still exist, and if so how do I get to it. (I want to give an example) (I suppose I could go to the Internet Archive but that seems daunting.) 2. what were the names of the people (usually Bay Area students) who laboriously constructed the hierachy of categories in Yahoo. Such as: Academic Institutions > Universities > Canada > Ontario, etc. No guesses, please. Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. Srinija Srinivasan was Yahoo's fifth employee, and as a graduate from Stanford's Symbolic Systems program, she was tasked with creating Yahoo's early ontology and classification system. While currently (I think) Yahoo's Editor-in-Chief, I at the start she was nick-named the "Ontological Yahoo". Srinija spoke at NYU a few years back,[1] and I think Helen Nissenbaum has stayed in touch with her if you need to make contact.
