Greetings all - I was wondering if anyone else has seen that PSA airing on the CBC warning kids about Internet safety? The video follows a young barely-adolescent girl (Sarah? I think) who in the course of her day keeps getting accosted by various older and skeevy-looking men who ask intimate questions based on her blog posts. It's a rather chilling ad, and therefore rather effective. I was wondering if anyone else has seen it and had any thoughts about the efficacy of this kind of use of fear of exposure? Also is the PSA online anywhere? Stephanie Tuszynski Visiting Assistant Professor Department of Theatre and Film University of Toledo
Hi Stephanie, I have yet to spot the PSA, but I'd love to see it. It sounds right up the alley of my current MA research into the offline impact of UGC/SNS, specifically with regards to matters of privacy. Intentionally or not, the following Rogers Wireless Facebook ad provides additional insight into the impact of (networked) user-generated content... http://youtube.com/watch?v=fQr9YOrm7kQ Regards, Steven James May MA Candidate, Media Production Ryerson University Toronto, Canada ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tuszynski, Stephanie" <stuszyn@UTNet.UToledo.Edu> Date: Tuesday, April 29, 2008 7:32 pm Subject: [Air-L] Canadian PSA To: air-l@listserv.aoir.org, air-l@listserv.aoir.org

Hi Stephanie, Steven, and the rest of the list, I am not sure if it is the same ad, but I've seen a PSA recently discussing similar issues. I did a quick Internet search and came across the Media Awareness Network, who are responsible for the PSA that I have seen. http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/corporate/media_kit/psas.cfm The ad that I am thinking of (Be Web Aware) is available as a Quicktime video and they also have several other ads available for downloading. Whether we are discussing the same PSA or not, I think that the use of chilling imagery can be effective, especially in focussing parental attention on the activities of their children online (and the integration of online and offline activities among adolescents). I would also be very interested to hear others' opinions on the subject!
