Hello! I'm wondering what AoIR members think of building a Discord? I realize that there are several platforms out there, and ironically we all are probably "too close" to some of the failings and/or opportunities of community, communication and digital space, but I would imagine that this group would probably hold a strong consensus that group email threads and listservs is an outdated way to share, organize, search for, and apply information. I'd love to connect more deeply with anyone who's interested. Here's a brief/simple survey to help me follow up and/or learn from the group: https://forms.gle/zbxmg5433r7LctKf8 Last but not least, here's an interesting article about the applications of Discord for better digital community practice: https://www.newkinco.com/projects/anitya-metaverse-platform Looking forward to connecting! My apologies... in the previous email I shared the incorrect link to the article about Discord communities. Here is the correct link: https://www.anitya.space/blog-posts/the-doorway-to-discord-a-pathway-to-new-... Again, ironically, this error would not have been made on a platform like Discord which provides a visually digestible preview of the links we share, and also allow us to edit messages seamlessly without piling on more words onto our collective Cognitive Load :) preaching to the choir, i guess.... :) On Wed, Oct 26, 2022 at 10:23 AM Roo S <rs5086@nyu.edu> wrote:

For what it's worth, I don't think email and listservs are "an outdated way to share, organize, search for, and apply information. People have been saying that for twenty years. But, to the contrary, email and listservs are an easy and reliable way to share important information, and are usually preferable to the proliferation of sites for this or that kind of conversation. -- PL It's Real Life <https://vocal.media/fiction/it-s-real-life> -- free, new alternate history short story about The Beatles & WFUV, now being made into a radio play On Wed, Oct 26, 2022 at 11:08 AM Roo S via Air-L <air-l@listserv.aoir.org> wrote:

I’m inclined to agree with that. Different forums are great for different purposes. I’m actually a bit reluctant to have many more apps on my phone. If I do decide Twitter is no longer working for academia and there’s an exodus of academics then I may move but my experiences with forums for sharing set up elsewhere, such as slack have not been great. People use them for a bit then don’t bother to continue. Emma On Wed, 26 Oct 2022 at 12:13, Paul Levinson via Air-L < air-l@listserv.aoir.org> wrote:

I would add that there is a privacy component to any of this… When we post in “public” (e.g. privately owned) companies, they own the aggregate of our collected contributions and can mine it with other data. On a listserve, we’re sort of keepers of our own conversation for the most part, at least not in the same way as more commercial apps. Sally

Another endorsement for listservs and the like. Been using them since the late 80s to build and manage communities and their demise is greatly exaggerated. As those on this list appreciate it better than most, it's all about context (Purpose, People, then Platform). Forums remain tried and true for building sustainable communities (vs social networking platforms). I'd prefer to participate in any kind of setting where we can maintain cooperative governance and ownership if possible (and avoid the whims of tech overlords). Looking forward to catching up with many of you in person at AOIR shortly! Cheers, Venessa Paech University of Sydney + 61 0435 217 315 venessa.paech@sydney.edu.au www.venessapaech.com @venessapaech
I have no argument against listservs, and run a bunch of longtime ones myself. They definitely still serve a purpose, even in 2022! On 28 Oct 2022, at 15:00, Venessa Paech via Air-L wrote:

While I've used Discord for hobby uses like online 3D games, I urge caution in using Discord for professional and academic use given they allegedly scrape chats for AI training. Our groups I participate in are looking for a similarly easy to use chat system to Discord. Ideally that would be one that is self-hosted for privacy reasons. Owning and controlling one's own data is important. An email list works okay for asynchronous conversations, but something closer to synchronous communications might be helpful for this group. If there was (and maybe there is) a Discord plug-in that could be set to send a daily or weekly digest to a set email list/address, that would be nifty. And vice versa, a daily table of contents digest with links to the archives of this list. Since my college freshman son lives on Discord, I figure there is an opportunity to connect students across schools with intent who are interested in AoIR themes. The question is how you go about attracting critical mass participation when launching on any new platform? Presumably mailing list archives are also beig scraped by AI training bots --- at least if they're publicly accessible. But I agree, comms privacy is paramount these days, for ANY number of reasons.

I too like email, and have had issues keeping up with several platforms at once. However, it can be good to filter some conversations into their own channels. Personally I've always found Discord somewhat convoluted. The multichannel platforms I see working well for groups are Slack and Telegram. What has been an absolute boon for me is installing Beeper https://beeper.com - reads all my groups and IMs (except Slack) and works on all my devices. Finally I actually can deal with Discord, too. Recently I have been getting 'address not found' a lot, when emailing aoir.
Why is that?

Consider this my vote for one big long chain letter, sent by post, where we draw little pictures of computers for each other and photocopied preprints with notes in the margins. I don’t even think I’m kidding! (in all seriousness, Discords have a whole host of bureaucratic concerns that can take an outsized amount of time and effort to organise — like ongoing moderation needs, especially. godspeed to all who facilitate a Discord! you are braver than me.) kat brewster On Wed, 18 Dec 2024 at 17:28, Joly MacFie via Air-L <air-l@listserv.aoir.org> wrote:
