Critical Internet Studies Ethnographies for Use in Undergrad Methods course
Dear AoIRistas I am seeking suggestions for new and recent ethnographies in the field of critical internet studies (broadly construed) for use in my undergraduate methods course in communication studies. I am looking for book-length monographs that are: a) theoretically driven; b) methodologically reflective; c) tell an interesting narrative about the research; and accessible to second-year undergraduates who are willing to stretch themselves. The books do not necessarily have to be located in communication/media studies in terms of discipline. In the past, I have used books that come out of anthropology as well as sociology, such as Ilana Gershon's The Break Up 2.0. The book I am currently using is Whitney Phillip's, This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things. I have had great success teaching the book, but I am getting tired of it, lol. I look forward to your suggestions. Andrew Herman, Ph. Hi, It's not a book, it's a report, but when I need a good example of an ethnography involving Internet sources, I usually turn to Dr. Francesca Tripodi's excellent Data & Society report on how online sources interact with other channels to form media practices among conservative news consumers: https://datasociety.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Data_Society_Searching-fo... The anthology 'Digital Sociologies', edited by Jessie Daniels, Karen Gregory, and Tressie McMillan Cottom also has some good (shorter) online ethnographies in it: https://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/digital-sociologies I would also recommend 'Watch Me Play' by T.L. Taylor about Twitch: http://watchmeplay.cc/ I also totally echo the recommendation of Dr. Roberts book, which is really great - and if you can find the documentary it inspired, 'The Cleaners', that's a really good companion. I use all of the above in my teaching. Thanks, Morten On 10/26/21, 8:38 AM, "Air-L on behalf of cynthiamcleod@umail.ucsb.edu" <air-l-bounces@listserv.aoir.org on behalf of cynthiamcleod@umail.ucsb.edu> wrote: Hello all, A recent book by Dr. Sarah T. At the risk of engaging in self-promotion, my dissertation might connect with some of your undergraduate students. Also not published, and probably a bit long-in-the-tooth at this point: https://conservancy.umn.edu/handle/11299/127547. It combines ethnographic and rhetorical methods to examine World of Warcraft and Farmville as digital communities. God, reading this again makes me feel old... -Rob Dr. Robert J.
