miserable failure
ok, so: Try "miserable failure" at Google.com and hit the "I'm feeling lucky" button two questions: 1) how cool is this? 2) does anyone know how it is done? david
'i am feeling lucky' button is basically referring to the first web page Google returned for your query, and only the first one. however, Google is unique among search engines, because while mostly it shows you pages that have the exact keywords you're looking for, occasionally it also shows you pages that don't have those keywords but other pages linked to that page with those keywords. and interestingly the linkers can impact the Google rank of the linkee.. This algorithm is called Google Bombs by a brilliant gag Adam Mathes. So, in the case 'miserable failure' while that page of Bush's biblio has no words of 'miserable failure', that page comes up as the page who has most links to the pages who link to it with the phrase 'miserable failure'. merlyna david silver wrote:

Many weblogs now link to that site with a link carrying the words "miserable failure." It appears to have started here: http://www.blah3.com/graymatter/archives/00000654.html Frank.
Apparently it's called google bombing when its part of a deliberate effort to associate a page with a phrase:(I found a ref online to someone using it in 2001) Article below outlines how its done: http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzgoog1206,0,2339508.story?coll=ny-bu siness-headlines Gina Gina Neff Postdoctoral Fellow Institute for Labor and Employment UCLA
Only slightly off topic, but amusing enough to warrant inclusion in this discussion. Try googling "Weapons of mass destruction" and using the I'm feeling lucky button. Cheers, Paul "Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know." - Donald Rumsfeld -----Original Message----- From: air-l-admin@aoir.org [mailto:air-l-admin@aoir.org] On Behalf Of Frank Schaap Sent: Friday, December 05, 2003 3:56 AM To: air-l@aoir.org Subject: Re: [Air-l] miserable failure

Dear fellow internet reseachers, for next year's conference in Sussex, I would like to put together a panel on identity and transnational netspaces. I am interested in the dynamics of diaspora groups and the formation of identity in connection with global or indeed local communication on over with the internet. As I am involved in such a project focusing on the russian migrant and diaspora community and their relation to Russia, through discourses, activism, political engagement and literature I would like to explore this theme a little further and go beyond the simple use of Internet by minority groups - are they indeed minority, when present on the Internet?! - and look at the dynamics of communications and diaspora/migrant groups. Would anybody be interested in exploring these issues? I thought of a panel of 3-4 papers, with a lively discussion on theory and practice, maybe more a discussion panel session than a consecutive presentation of longer papers... Awaiting your ideas and comments and maybe contributions.... best nilz -- Dr. Nils Zurawski Universität Hamburg Inst. für kriminologische Sozialforschung Allendeplatz 1 20146 Hamburg Germany tel. +49 (0) 40 42838 6185 fax. +49 (0) 40 42838 2328 Projekt zu Videoüberwachung: http://www.uni-muenster.de/PeaCon/zurawski/ueberwachung
