Launch event (online): Civic Participation in the Datafied Society
The Data Justice Lab invites you to the following online event: Civic Participation in the Datafied Society Presentation of research report and discussion with Arne Hintz, Joanna Redden, Emiliano Treré, Jess Brand and Harry Warne (Data Justice Lab) Comments and further insights: Aidan Peppin (Ada Lovelace Institute) When: Monday, 10 October, 3-5 pm (UK time) Where: Online You will receive the Zoom link if you RSVP to datajusticelab@cardiff.ac.uk by Friday 7 October While data and automated decision systems are rapidly rolled out in both the public and private sector, people often have little knowledge about how these systems work, nor how they can intervene into, and participate in, decisions about the use of data. How, then, do we advance people’s voice in the deployment of data and AI? How do we democratise datafied governance? Our new report Civic Participation in the Datafied Society explores different ways in which citizens are – and can be – involved in these decisions which are fundamentally transforming societies. We have investigated the roles of citizen juries and citizen summits, oversight and advisory institutions, civil society campaigns, alternative discourses and infrastructures, and efforts to advance data literacy. In this 2-hour session we will present the research and our main findings. We will hear about further work by the Ada Lovelace Institute on how to advance civic participation. And we'll have a discussion with all participants on the most promising practices and experiences, the most serious challenges, and a way forward towards a bigger role for citizens in decision-making over data.
