I would like to add 3 points that I found important in the current discussion. The point regarding the relationship between the online-offline contexts can be further developed with the introduction of concepts such as embodiment and the Internet of things. Hi Elodie, many thanks indeed! All three points are clearly relevant and helpful. FWIW, in the run-up to this definition, I refer specifically to discussions of embodiment, the blurring of the 1990s' emphasis on strong distinctions between online and offline - and it is clear that the internet of things will only amplify, if not more or less eliminate such a distinction. The cultural differences point is equally spot-on. It is emphasized here less than it should be - thanks for that. For that, as you know, "culture" (however we many manage to define or approximate it) has been the focus of the Cultural Attitudes towards Technology (CATaC) conference series that began in 1998 (and where Steve Jones, among other things, pointed out that we should take matters of embodiment on board ...). So far as I can tell, "the culture question" is less outrageous and heretical as it appeared to be in 1998 - i.e., as Barry Wellman points out regarding Internet Studies more broadly, all of this has diffused more and more into mainstream / diverse disciplines. But not enough yet, in my view - so again, thanks for this as well.
