ARC Linkage Grant - PHD Student Scholarship (ARC APAI) Opportunities in Citizen Journalism COMMENCING IN FEBRUARY 2007 A three year PhD scholarship exists at QUT as part of an ARC Linkage Project on the possibilities for citizen journalism to generate new forms of news through user-generated online content. Project Title Investigating Innovative Applications of Digital Media for Participatory Journalism and Citizen Engagement in Australian Public Communication Project Description The aims of this ARC Linkage Project are to: (i) investigate emergent forms of online news and information in Australia; (ii) prototype new forms of news production, editing, distribution and collaboration through user-generated online content; (iii) establish new channels of interaction between established and emergent media; (iv) enable wider networks of public communication, media analysis and public policy formation, linked to diversification of sources of information, perspectives and practices. The PhD student will be involved in the following activities: * Empirical analysis of Australian online news and opinion sites and network analysis of linkages across these online sites; * Evaluation of emergent forms of news production and distribution practices in these emergent media; * Evaluation of user/participant data in a dedicated online project site; * Investigation of comparable international examples; * Dissemination of research findings through both academic publications and public communications media. Selection Criteria The PhD student should possess: * A high class Honours thesis or equivalent (e.g. Masters or work experience) in media and communications (including new media studies), journalism, sociology or politics; * High level skills in applied media research, particularly in new media; * High-level technical and non-technical verbal and written communication skills; * Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. The following attributes are also desirable: * Practical experience in media-related activities, particularly in emergent media such as online journalism, blogs and collaborative publishing systems; * A demonstrated understanding of communication skills in the online environment. Stipend The stipend is a living allowance of $24,650 per annum in 2006, tax exempt and indexed annually for the three-year tenure. Eligibility Applicants must have a minimum Honours 2A or equivalent, and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
