Oxford conference 8-10 September 2005
Dear Colleague, I would like to draw your attention to an important conference on Internet safety and security to be held in Oxford on 8-10 September. Against the backdrop of increasing and often sensational media coverage about the potential abuse of the Internet by spammers, hackers, paedophiles and terrorists, the conference will examine whether and how such fears are changing the complex and delicate balance of values and interests at stake in the Internet's global network of networks. The conference will draw on the experience and evidence of distinguished researchers, policy-makers, business leaders and practitioners to foster considered discussion and analysis in the context of current live issues such as child protection, network security and individual privacy. Its prime aim is to help inform decision-making by all relevant stakeholders with a better understanding of the societal implications of the choices being made. Key speakers include Howard A. Schmidt (Former Special Adviser for Cyberspace Security to the White House), Prof. Sonia Livingstone (Dept. of Media & Communications, London School of Economics), John Carr, Peter Coroneos (Chief Executive, Internet Industry Association, Australia) and Jonathan Zittrain (Professor of Internet Regulation and Governance, OII). Called 'Safety and Security in a Networked World: Balancing Cyber-rights and Responsibilities', the conference's website ( <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/cybersafety> www.oii.ox.ac.uk/cybersafety) has details of invited speakers, the programme and how to register. It is organised by the Oxford Internet Institute in close collaboration with international partners, including the University of Auckland, the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, the European Information Society Group (EURIM) and NetSafe. If you have any questions about this event, please e-mail the conference team at <mailto:cybersafety@oii.ox.ac.uk> cybersafety@oii.ox.ac.uk . best Dr Victoria Nash Policy and Research Officer Oxford Internet Institute University of Oxford www.oii.ox.ac.uk <http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/>
Hi Vicki: just a quick note on the conference - don't you want to involve some IG people? I know its boring, but after all the WGIG report recommends a new oversight board to, amongst other things, monitor and increase network security. And since WSIS is going to happen in the aftermath of the conference it might be relevant to get somebody like Kummer to join the conference.....
