Hi Jeremy! This might be redundant for you - but there is a great hype about this in German media - at least in such, that an intelligent person would read... The idea seems to be, that Science and its results should be available to anyone without cost - seems to me, that the ideal of OpenSource finally got to the acadamics, too... ;) Interesting will be, how the big Science-Magazines will act....do you have any source? I mean, most are American....so they should be the first to shout... Sorry, if this should be redundant - but I would greatly appreciate any information on this, that you would like to share... Nature has a news article on PLoS (Public Library of Science) in its 9 October issue (p554). The author reports that some editors feel that the "author pays" model will underfund the journal by a factor of four or more. Of note are two other financial factors: PLoS is being subsidized to the tune of $9 million; and that some institutions will be picking up the $1500 "distribution fee. S. Liban wrote:

plos and plob probably aren't 'open' access, as they are not open at all really. however, there is a significant amount of press and coverage on this. you can find things on open access journals quite easily either on my blog or on fos or many other places. it isn't the provision of things at no cost, it the provision of things that we have already as an international community significantly invested in, and it isn't open source, as much as open outcomes, because the source is set of human minds, and while they are open to interpretation, they are not open in the same way as code. .... if you want more info feel free to drop me a note On Friday, October 24, 2003, at 08:21 PM, Charles Hendricksen wrote:
