Hi All I wrote a paper on this (Digital Overflow) for the AoIR conference in Maastricht 2002 which I now need to update. I've just been to the AoIR members site but it's under maintenance, so can't be accessed. If anyone has written anything about this in the last 2 - 3 years I'd be really glad to hear of it. I'm particularly interested in full-time workers based outside the home but who bring (extra) work into the home or conduct some of their required work hours at home (using the internet). I'm less interested in full-time home workers as it's much easier to search and find the literature on these, but if anyone knows of anything particularly useful, it would also be good to hear about it. Many thanks Sue
We made a 20 minute DVD called "Before the Horse" (as in, 'don't put the cart before the horse') for the phase I Summit in Geneva last December. It deals with the digital divide in India, Kenya, & Ghana...it's not completely self-explanatory (no voice overs), but if you watch it before you show it in class you'll 'get it' and you could provide some background for them. There were some webcasts of an MIT event: http://web.media.mit.edu/~stevew/events/divide.htm - see 2nd webcast link (http://www.media.mit.edu/events/movies/video.php?id=bt-2004-05-19) not sure if they're still available? Ben
"Digital Divide" a TV series available from PBS http://www.pbs.org/digitaldivide/about.html#series maybe of interest... Here is a description from the site: " DIGITAL DIVIDE is a two-part series for PBS that explores how the rapid spread of computer technology is affecting young people across the country. Narrated by Queen Latifah, the series asks the question: is everyone participating equally, if at all, in the Digital Revolution? And are "wired" kids being taught how to use computers in ways that enhance instead of replace traditional learning skills? Through interviews with innovators around the country who are bridging the digital divide in the classroom and in the streets, the series explores some of the best practices for using technology effectively at school and in the home. The series focuses on the many aspects of the digital divide, exploring how the issues plays out in terms of education, employment, race, and gender. wikipedia has a nascent page on internet research at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_research I have only recently discovered and made only very minor updates to this pages content very recently, but I do suggest that for the sake of being inclusive in wikipedia, that it would be good if some people from this list went and built up the article to be a more substantive and inclusive. so go check it out, add to it, edit it, etc.
