The feature – hidden away in the Orwellian-named “Manage Social Advertising” option – has to be switched off through a user’s account settings. Permission for this is tucked away in a new condition in LinkedIn’s Terms of Use, which makes it an opt-out feature. Already, Radio Netherlands Worldwide has reported that the new profile setting may breach Dutch privacy law. The CBP, The Netherlands’ data protection agency, says the use of LinkedIn members’ photographs can only be used in advertising material with the users’ explicit consent. The Radio Netherlands piece notes that the Dutch view is in line with that of the EU Data Protection Working Party, and also states that LinkedIn failed to properly notify users of the change. ®
It's even more insidious than this. Not just the "Manage Social Advertising" but also "Turn on/off data sharing with 3rd party applications<https://www.linkedin.com/settings/data-sharing?goback=%2Enas_*1_*1_*1>" (under Groups, Companies and Applications) and under Accounts "Manage Social Advertising" and the slightly less insidious "Enhanced Advertising." WOW! Thanks Rick and Meryl for bringing these changes to our attention. The options to change the settings are really "tucked in":) They require some searching. Not sure the average user will ever find them without some clear pointing out. I know the whole concept of privacy has taken on a new meaning with social networks, but will *any* degree of privacy ever be respected again? Tweaking, not doing what users what. That blog post is spin. Linked In haven't 'listened to their users'. The social ads are still opt out! They have only said they will not use user images in the ads, but they are still using links to users who follow a firm that they are advertising. This means I will not follow firms on Linked In. If I follow a firm it's because I won't to know what they are doing not to endorse them in ads!
