Why do people apologize for cross-posting?
How else do you get the word out to multiple lists. Please be proud of yourself. Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. You apologize to gently inform people that you are fully aware that you did cross post and that they may as such receive many copies of the same thing. On Dec 10, 2012, at 6:25 PM, Barry Wellman <wellman@chass.utoronto.ca> wrote:

Going one step further, one would also apologize for cross-replying. Of course, cross-replying can only be done if the original poster not just apologizes for cross-posting, but also tells everyone where the f%&"%$% s/he did so. --u At 18:34 Uhr -0500 10.12.2012, jeremy hunsinger wrote:

Dear Barry, My theory is that it dates back to the day of Usenet. If you cross-posted to multiple Usenet groups, the members of all those groups would see all responses. This meant that folks from alt.fan.kirk-rules would have to be contaminated with content written by members of alt.fan.picard-rules. Oh, the humanity! ;-) Best regards from Deborah P.S. It's also a way to acknowledge to each group that others are being notified of the same thing. Some groups have rules or social norms about replies, archives, etc. so it's polite to let others know that this message is not exclusively for them. Or, taking a different perspective, it's nice to know that it might have already been sent to that other list where you were thinking of posting it.
