POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS DEPARTMENT/UNIT School of Journalism and Communication REFERENCE NUMBER 15/374(737)/3 CLOSING DATE December 1, 2015 POST SPECIFICATION The School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is hiring three full-time Postdoctoral Fellows in the following areas: (A) youth studies; (B) digital labor in comparative perspectives; and (C) media events in Chinese cyberspace. Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree in a related Social Science or Humanities discipline with track records in research; and (ii) good command of English and Chinese (for Postdoctoral Fellows A and C). Postdoctoral Fellow B does not have to know Chinese, but competence in another Asian language will be a plus. For all the three Postdoctoral Fellows, skills in applying digital methods to media production and/or reception analyses will be an additional merit. Postdoctoral Fellow A will assist Professor Anthony Fung in spearheading interdisciplinary projects for the Faculty of Social Science's focal research area, youth studies, using survey, quantitative and qualitative analysis. Postdoctoral Fellow B will work with Professor Jack Qiu and Professor Anthony Fung in studying the structures and dynamics of digital labor (including creative labor) at both organizational and institutional levels, especially in Southeast Asia and East Asia, using interviews, secondary data analysis, and online and offline field research. Postdoctoral Fellow C will work with Professor Jack Qiu and Professor Joseph Chan in conducting comparative analysis of Internet-facilitated media events in different Chinese societies and across time, using qualitative methods, case studies, online ethnography and archival research. Job duties for the three Research Fellows include (a) research design, data collection and analysis, writing up of grant proposals and publications, and the dissemination of project findings; (b) management of research team involving other colleagues and assistants; and (c) coordination of workshops, seminars and conferences. Specific tasks will be specified by the project supervisors (i.e. Professor Fung, Professor Qiu and Professor Chan). Appointment will be made on contract basis for eighteen months commencing January 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.
