Penetration testing is an “ethical hacking” activity intended to improve an organisations defences against cybercrime. Penetration testing is the evaluation of the resistance of an information system to external threats. The goal of the project is to develop a research – with direct collaboration between sociology and computer security - that will study the social and organisational practices of penetration testing and broaden our understanding of what it means for information systems to be secure. We welcome applicants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds (e.g. Sociology, Social Sciences, Media Studies – but not limited to these). The Studentship will commence in September 2014 for a period of up to 3.5 years.
