------------------------------------------- INTERNEWS SEEKS RADIO TRAINER/MENTOR FOR AFGHANISTAN --------------------------------------------- Job Title: Radio Trainer/Mentor, Afghanistan SUMMARY: Journalism and radio production mentoring for new radio stations in Afghanistan. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Internews Network, a nonprofit media development organization, is seeking experienced, adventurous radio production and journalism mentors to assist in the startup of national independent radio in Afghanistan. Mentors will have the opportunity to assist in the creation of national programming to feed a network of local stations, Afghan-owned and operated, throughout Afghanistan. From January until the end of 2004, mentors will help an Afghan team develop news and current affairs programs to be fed by satellite to a network of stations around the country, starting with two hours a day in March/April. In 2003 Internews helped Afghan partners launch seven independent stations, and five more will be on air by February 2004. These 12 stations form the basis of a network of local and regional stations across the country. A local translator will be provided if necessary. Minimum term of employment is two months, with preference for three or more. Working professionals encouraged to apply. Salary negotiable. Specifics of the job include: * teaching fundamentals of radio production to Afghan staff. * teaching fundamentals of journalism to Afghan staff. * working closely with radio station management to design programming schedules. * helping define listenership interest and community relations. * liaison with other organizations in the region, such as humanitarian assistance and international organizations. * assisting the station on questions of sustainability. * research into media needs and potential pressures that could influence the stations' independence. QUALIFICATIONS * Five + years experience as a radio journalist and/or producer * Experience teaching radio journalism and or radio production * Media management experience * Overseas working experience in a developing world environment, preferably Central and/or So. Asia * Dari or Pashtu language skills desirable * Relevant university degree required -------------------------------------- IMPACS MEDIA AND ELECTIONS SEMINAR FOR PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN EMERGING DEMOCRACIES -- FEBRUARY 20-22, 2004 TORONTO, ONTARIO -------------------------------------- Increasingly, civil society organizations and media professionals are recognizing the centrality of supporting fair, accurate and responsible reporting of elections in countries where democracy is a fragile or a new idea. The Institute for Media, Policy and Civil Society (IMPACS), a Canadian-based non governmental organization, is hosting a three-day seminar for reporters, editors, and media development professionals interested in sharing, developing and honing their skills in this field. Seminar topics will include risk assessment and security training, working with elections administrators and state-run media executives, developing effective training for new reporters, and the latest tools and resources for working in the field and evaluating success. Detailed case studies by reporters and trainers working in the field will offer lessons learned working in conflict-stressed states like Cambodia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Iraq.
