Re: [Air-L] Air-L Digest, Vol 201, Issue 11
Hi Cory, I agree with previous answers that the university probably has some standardized protocol for handling data (my university, for example, demands cloud storage within their own servers, etc.) In terms of using the data, I have found that assigning participants ID numbers is pretty impersonal and leads to confusion, I tend to prefer pseudonyms. If a quote or a participant could be identified even through a pseudonym (for example, because their situation or context is very specific), I've found using 'composite' characters (where I merge two participants in one fictional one) useful, as well as simply changing some participants' attributes (age, location, job, etc.). Ideally, keeping it still relevant and significant but also making it harder to trace back? Hope this helps! On Wed, 7 Apr 2021 at 19:58, <air-l-request@listserv.aoir.org> wrote:

Thank you for all for the many interesting topics/literature/CfP emails and discussions sent through this list, its very much appreciated !
I would like to take this opportunity to ask for some advice for my own research practice, I am looking to integrate academic and artistic research on law and digital technology with a focus on autonomy. Having done my dues in the academic field (my background is in law and sociology) conducting doctrinal research and as a multimedia artist I am slowly developing a research practice that uses both.
Looking at Speculative ‘design’ has been informative and I was wondering if people know of such practices maybe do something similar and/or can advice on theoretical/practical approaches for me to frame my work/practice in ?
Happy to connect and discuss as I am planning to make this more concrete as I go along because I think it will have added value for the many discussions on regulating digital innovations I am involved in and working on if we can have alternative means to try and understand the topic of investigating

Dear Colleagues,
We are very excited to announce a call for contributions to a joint Dialogue Section-Art Forum of Surveillance & Society we are calling "Surveillance Stories: Imagining Surveillance Futures." Storytelling has the ability to capture the imagination and to attract a wide audience. Stories can also generate important meanings, engage metaphors, and explore new possibilities in ways that conventional academic papers often cannot, or at least typically do not.
Therefore, for this special project, we invite contributions that creatively engage with the possibilities of the surveillant future. Submissions should inform how we ought to think about surveillance, regulate surveillance, or study surveillance to achieve/avoid the futures depicted in the stories. These pieces can take the form of a short narrative piece (~800 to 2000-words, if text-based; ~2-5 minutes if time-based media), including speculative stories. They can also involve artistic interventions that explore and visualize this topic. Contributions can be fictional, quasi-fictional, or nonfiction stories (presented in a narrative fashion) that draw on surveillance studies research and theory to imagine what possible surveillance futures might look like.
Our interest here is to encourage stories that imagine utopian as well as dystopian futures, and that utilize creative text, images, video, and other forms of artistic expression (the range of media for artworks that can be presented is subject to the technological limitations of the journal's platform, but can include video and limited photography or images-please get in touch if you have questions about what might be possible). For selected pieces, we will also request that authors include a closing paragraph or two at the end of each piece that specifically links the elements of the story to existing surveillance studies research (including research previously published in Surveillance & Society or elsewhere, or that builds on the authors' own fieldwork or other research). (Media not based in text should also include a transcript of dialogue, basic description of the visuals, etc.)
Along with the narration of surveillant futures as a mode of creative address, our goal with this special project is to make space for explorations that focus on and derive from various regions and perspectives often under-represented in surveillance studies research. We are interested in bringing into conversation a collection of works that capture a range of approaches and from a multitude of viewpoints. As such, we will prioritize submissions against those criteria, in addition to excellence and fit with the full set of accepted pieces.

Your question seems to go beyond attributing quotes in theses, and more about protecting the underlying data. Does your university have an institutional review board (IRB) or equivalent? Did these studies go through any kind of review process? Universities commonly have their own internal requirements for protecting participants and maintaining anonymity with qual research.

HI all,
Two Master’s students I recently met are conducting recorded interviews resulting in texts they will code and quote within their theses. I have given input about how to protect the recorded interviews (encrypted, password protected, not stored in the cloud). I do not work with qual data, so I need help recommending methodology or help for anonymizing quotes in their thesis.
(I am inquiring about this for a student, that unfortunately, has not received helpful advice from their supervisor). ☹
The students assumed they would assign each participating an identification number, and then attribute the quote and ID # in their thesis. However, I feel there is surely a better way to ensure anonymity? (Too easy to reidentify if research data was obtained).
What methods do you utilize for anonymizing individual interview data? Or manuscripts/books helpful for this? Sadly, the students are nearing the end of the study, but late is better than never. (It’s indeed a failure of universities, as well as unequipped supervisors!)

For the reporting part, your students may simply provide the demographic information that describes the participants, instead of mentioning their names, when they write the research reports with quotes. For example, your students may say a female business professional said “...”. By doing so, your students can protect the participants’ privacy and not specify their names.
However, to be safe, you may double check with your university’s institutional review board (IRB) officer and see whether it is fine to do so. To my understanding, we need to get IRB approval for academic research projects first before collecting primary data in the U.S. If you are in other countries, there might be different regulations. But, it’s always important to check the data collection and reporting policies first.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Ming-Yi

I've been searching the last couple of weeks for a data set that contains social media use by platform (e.g. Facebook, Twitter), by country, and by year. I haven't been able to find a single freely available tabular data set out there that fits the bill.
I've found a few that do individual countries, but gathering each individual country's data, per year, is a time sink I'd like to avoid.
So does such a unified data set exist? Have you used similar data sets in the past, and what would you recommend?
Thank you all, and I hope you're all staying safe and healthy!
