Software/Platform/Architecture studies methodologies?
Greetings all; I am looking for research methodologies to study things like data flow lines, systems, platforms, following data trails, IoT and data, etc. Things like: - Applied theory - Walkthrough methods - Ethnographic (of systems/orgs/platforms but not of social media) - and etc. We have lots of great theory, but hard to find some research methods. Any intel would be most helpful. At the moment it is about looking at utility and transportation grids and meters and sensors in a smart city context. But it could also be something similar in a precision agriculture context. Cheerio t -- *Tracey P. Hello, Tracey -- I've been working on "critical reverse engineering" as a method for the study of software and platforms. I am still writing it out as a method, but I do have this paper http://fou.ubiquitypress.com/articles/abstract/10.16995/lefou.26/ which connects CRE to Foucaultian genealogy. In addition, Amanda Friz and I focus on "sign up interfaces" in Pinterest in this paper: http://mcs.sagepub.com/content/38/5/686 I think our approach was similar to Light and Burgess's App walkthrough. I lay out the overall idea of CRE in other works, but not so much the method per se. I hope these help -- in fact, please let me know if they do! Regards, Rob On 09/13/2017 02:52 PM, Tracey P. Thanks Rob, I'm currently working on a grant application in partnership with a design consultancy that tries to investigate algorithmic accountability by experimenting with different interface designs. This will mean that we'll have to do some system-based research, and I'm hoping your approach will help. Tracey - I did some ethnographic mapping in my PhD that also included mapping infrastructure elements (WiFi networks, at that time). I'm currently reviewing walking methods and sensor-based walking mapping for the data walking project http://www.datawalking.org. Happy to share this if you are interested - not all of it is published. alison. On 13/09/2017 22:21, Robert W Gehl wrote:

Hi Tracey and folks, I'd take a look at Mary Gray and Siddharth Suri's work on crowd labor: http://www.inthecrowd.org/publications/ They did a mix of ethnography and big data analysis, so their methodology is very cool. If you're interested in going the ethnography route, I'm writing my dissertation on crafting platforms (Etsy & Ravelry) and the folks who work on them into a book at the moment and would be happy to chat. Mike Michael and I have done some work using design/cultural probes and hands-on activities to investigate public understandings of personal digital dataveilance. I am having a lot of fun at the moment experimenting with design sociology methods. Hello, we designed and implemented a browser plugin based infrastructure with which volunteers can share their data stream with us when they visit certain websites, including social media. currently 400+ participants from a social science research panel already donated 16000 days worth of data. we've written up the design and the challenges here: Tackling the Algorithmic Control Crisis—the Technical, Legal, and Ethical Challenges of Research into Algorithmic Agents B. Bodo, et al. 19 Yale J.L. & Tech. 133 http://yjolt.org/sites/default/files/bodoetal_0.pdf get in touch if you are interested setting up the infrastructure for your study. Hi all, at AlgorithmWatch we're currently running Datenspende (data donation), a crowdsourced external auditing of Google's search results. It has some similarities to the approach Bodo and his colleagues at UVA are taking although we're collecting a lot less info (albeit from a lot more people). There's an English language description here https://datenspende.algorithmwatch.org/en/ Preliminary results have so far only been published in German: https://algorithmwatch.org/de/filterblase-geplatzt-kaum-raum-fuer-personalis... We're hoping to be able to provide some English language results on the project in the near future. Cornelius Puschman has posted some of his analysis of the data we collected in English (also here on the list a while ago): https://www.hiig.de/en/blog/how-significant-is-algorithmic-personalization-i...
