hey, I don't know much about the history, but your mention of Circle of Trust brought to mind the PGP trust referral system. It was a sort of network of positive nods, and the more trusted a thumbs up, the more trusted the "thumbee." This is a form of social network, but I don't know when or where it actually fits in.
