I realize this isn't likely the appropriate place for it, but I am getting a bit concerned that I can't find a reasonably priced room near the conference hotel. I left it too late to get the discounted rooms (shame on me), so I am now facing either a very pricey room in the Hilton or somewhere else... Does anyone have a suggestion for a room nearby that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I am not fussy - would take just about anything. i think that hotel george williams is fairly reasonable priced at approximately 70 euros/night, it is close by the conference venue, and ranked #7 in brisbane hotels by tripadvisor.com (the brisbane hilton is ranked #26, but is far more expensive). http://www.hgw.com.au/ http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g255068-d257330-Reviews-Hotel_George... christian _________________ Christian Fuchs Assistant Professor for Internet and Society ICT&S Center: Advanced Studies and Research in Information and Communication Technologies & Society (http://www.icts.uni-salzburg.at) Sigmund Haffner Gasse 18 5020 Salzburg Austria christian.fuchs@sbg.ac.at Homepage: http://cartoon.iguw.tuwien.ac.at/christian/ Journal tripleC: http://triplec.uti.at *Hotel George Williams </Hotel_Review-g255068-d257330-Reviews-Hotel_George_Williams-Brisbane_Queensland.html>,* Richard Smith schrieb:

There is a Astor Best Western quite close, 3 and 3.5 stars which would be basic but adequate. I have booked a basic room for $Aus85 a night for the Weds and Thurs. Weekend rates are higher. The George Williams is quite a long walk away, across the river. Try wotif.com and search for Brisbane M-H On 10/09/2006, at 7:27 PM, Christian Fuchs wrote:

Hi all just to let you know that, unlike last year, our conference costs are not linked to the number of people who stay at the Hilton - that's been an issue at other conferences but we got the rates based on catering etc rather than room-stays. That said, the Hilton is a very classy hotel and brilliantly located. Might be worth the extra $ over a 4.5 * place. Anyway, transport around brisbane is very good and many hotels in walking distance from backpacker cheap to almost as expensive (or more) than the Hilton. Incidentally, has anyone done research into the way the Internet has changed the cultural formation of the travel business by giving people more control (maybe?) or feedback relating to their experiences? I have personal anecdotal evidence but would be interested to see more. Maybe a good international collaborative grant possibility too. If interested, let me know off list - more interested in cultural and social factors, but economic/business too would be fine M Dr Matthew Allen Associate Professor Internet Studies Curtin University of Technology, CRICOS 00301J Australia m.allen@curtin.edu.au http://smi.curtin.edu.au/netstudies/allen.htm <https://email.curtin.edu.au/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://smi.curtin.edu.au/netstudies/allen.htm> +61 8 92663511 (v) +61 8 9266 3166 (f) President, Association of Internet Researchers http://www.aoir.org <https://email.curtin.edu.au/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.aoir.org/>
