As a result of a last minute drop-out, we have available a UK/EU PhD Scholarship*, or International Fees Bursary* for candidates with a 1st, 2(i), or equivalent, interested in applying for the following project in the Faculty of Education here at the University of Hull:

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a PhD studentship that will explore the applications of immersive virtual environments (virtual worlds) in Higher Education for one or more of the following: creative approaches to learning and teaching; pedagogy; the development of taxonomies and assessment; individual identity in the virtual world.

The application of immersive virtual environments has in recent years been a rapidly developing phenomenon in a wide range of educational and training contexts, although relatively little is known of how their unique features can best be exploited. Higher Education has taken a particular interest in this technology, often primarily to facilitate distance or asynchronous learning and teaching, although institutions have at times found benefits to be uncertain.

The studentship will be open to developing an individual focus but potential areas of study might include: applying the use of empirical data to a model of learning in the virtual world; the nature of effective assessment in immersive virtual environments; how individual identity is developed and articulated in immersive virtual contexts; the implications for pedagogical models of learning and teaching in immersive virtual worlds; the development of an evidence-based taxonomy of learning for immersive virtual worlds.

These suggested areas are examples rather than an exhaustive list and the student appointed will be encouraged to explore in areas of her or his own interest. The broad topic will remain the application of immersive virtual environments in Higher Education with a focus that includes contexts beyond the UK being especially welcome.

In order to qualify for this scholarship applicants will require a minimum of a 2.1 in a relevant subject.

* A full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship will include fees at the ‘home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£13,590 in 2013/14, subject to final confirmation) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress. Full-time International Fee PhD Studentships will include full fees at the International student rate for three years, depending on satisfactory progress, but no living expenses.
