I think whether they come or not depends on what it is that you built. If you have solved the Poincare Conjecture, publishing it solely in your Gardening Blog will probably get you the Fields Medal. If you are offering another perspective on the effect of the internet on domestic arrangements, your research will probably have no impact at all unless it is published in a high-impact forum.
