I would like to add some new information aimed especially at the suggestion of an academic boycott of Israeli universities. For the last four years (until August 2023) I was Chair of the Department of Communication and Journalism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, many of whose faculty and students are very active in AoIR. About 20% of the students in our department are Palestinians, a term which includes those who come from within the “green line” (the pre-1967 borders of Israel) and who define themselves variously as Palestinian, Israeli, or Israeli-Palestinian (i.e. it’s complicated), and many students from East Jerusalem. Our faculty and department have instituted programmes to foster their participation and success in our programmes (which are mainly conducted in Hebrew), including special courses in Arabic, and group and individual mentoring at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our students, notably but not only women, and notably but not only the first generation in their families to attend university, have successfully completed degrees and have - among other things - conducted ground-breaking studies of Palestinian social media use and activism (especially in East Jerusalem) and (often highly critical) research on the experience of Palestinian students in Israeli academia. In one particular current faculty-led research project, 2 Palestinian women and 2 Jewish women together analyse TikTok posts by Palestinians and Israeli Jews from the 2021 Gaza war, focusing on questions of polysemy, critique and diversity of interpretation. They have continued to do this, I should add, even during the current war. Have our department and university programmes created a utopia of diversity and harmonious academic (and social) exchange across the battle-lines? Of course not: we all recognise the very severe constraints, asymmetries and near-insurmountable challenges of our geopolitical and existential situation. As I write this, classes are being held in which Palestinian students, with relatives and friends in Gaza and the West Bank, are sitting next to Jewish students who have family members held hostage in Gaza (or who were victims on 7.10), or who have just returned from fighting in Gaza. That they manage to do this without violence breaking out in the classroom is a testimony to them, and to our the support systems the university and its staff have instituted (it also shames the tone of some of the contributors to this thread). The walking wounded are everywhere on campus - even if you cannot easily see the wounds. But our programmes are producing, at least according to many of our Palestinian students, new life-transforming possibilities for them, and we hope that in the longer term they will foster a generational cohort of outstanding graduates who can be recruited as full-time faculty in the future. I should add that ours is not the only department at the Hebrew University with programmes like these, and that other Israeli universities are also engaged in similar initiatives. So: if you are in favour of a boycott, this is the institution, and the people in it, who you will be excluding from the universe of legitimate discourse about the Israel-Palestinian conflict, and any other relevant topic (digital media and Judaism!!!), where instead you could be engaging in conversation and even showing solidarity with our extraordinarily challenging situation. Know who you will be shunning, and be sure your sense of entitlement to excommunicate us isn’t sanctimonious narcissism disguised as moral principle. Finally, the argument that boycotts are only institutional and do not affect individuals is at best a legalistic fantasy, and at worst a downright lie. To give a recent example from my own personal knowledge (and to extrapolate from it): an Australian media and culture scholar declined a request to be a reader of a doctorate written by a student at an Israeli university, on the basis of supporting the academic boycott. There is no use pretending that the student wasn’t being punished for being Israeli (not all Israelis have the life circumstances that allow then to leave Israel and study at what this scholar would consider a “kosher” institution). Let’s assume that the student was Jewish - but had the student been Palestinian, with an identifiably Arabic name, the would-be-boycotter would be presented with a dilemma: s/he could either enforce the boycott, on the basis that a Palestinian student at an Israeli university is basically some kind of collaborator and doesn’t deserve exceptional treatment, or s/he - baulking at potentially worsening the life chances of a Palestinian - could decide to make an exception and agree to review the dissertation, thereby effectively discriminating against other students from the same university purely on the basis of them being Jewish. There is no way around this kind of harm: institutions contain and are constituted by people. Again, know who you shun as a result of your gesture politics, and what its consequences are. The Anthropology boycott listed focuses on institutions, not individuals.
However, it seems you have a strong concern about collective punishment. Even where some academic institutions and academics clearly endorse and support the actions of the Israeli government, they should not be subject to having access to fewer academic opportunities.
Given your concerns about punishing academics for where they live and work, can we take this as an endorsement of some statement in solidarity with students and academics who have had their universities bombed, and who have been killed, injured, and displaced simply because they live (or lived) in Gaza?

It might involve a commitment to ask our own academic institutions to cut their ties with the Israeli state. It might take some other format.
*Why now?*
There are many acts of violence and oppression happening around the world. Why should our academic organisation speak up on this, specifically?

I do not think that AoIR has tended to position itself as a neutral or apolitical organisation. Past conference themes <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Internet_Researchers> have included ?Revolutions? and ?Decolonising the Internet?. My sense is that there was also a response and a discussion within the organisation to the Black Lives Matter movement, among other issues.
Of course, I am aware that academic organisations will not often respond to international events. Perhaps the silence so far is entirely for this reason. Perhaps we are afraid that if we speak up on this we will also be asked to speak about Sudan, Congo, and other issues (would that be terrible?)
However, I think that we must also acknowledge the chilling effect that many academics and others experience specifically on the matter of Israel.
Antisemitism is a real and significant problem in the world. I understand that many people do not want to contribute to the real antisemitism faced by our friends, colleagues, and students face. We all have a duty to oppose antisemitism in our communities and universities. Perhaps that leads to a reluctance to speak out about the Israeli state?s actions. I see that you take the silence of most participants as a sign of support to your position in the issue. I am of the opinion that the aggressive and insulting responses have rightly dissuaded most people from participating in the discussion. In any case, at this point the only possible action regarding an AoIR statement is, as Dr. Sinnreich stated, to wait for an official proposal by the AoIR Executive Committee.
Dr. Aouragh, on the other hand, has never suggested that some people write a statement and force it to the rest of the AoIR members as a joint statement. I fear that singling her out in this way for an email prior to your last message can lead to making her a target for mass harassment. I sure hope that this was not your aim, but it is always good to be extra careful during discussions about mass violence.
I will repost what I had previously shared regarding the discussions. In the end, I am not that interested in whether AoIR will make a statement or not. I was more interested in the discussion. As it frequently happens, I am disappointed in the results.

If you are suggesting taking the conversation into a private forum to craft a statement that represents the individuals involved in drafting such a statement rather than AoIR as a whole, that is of course your right. If you are suggesting doing so in order to present some kind of finished product to a membership where a minority of people have weighed in with vastly different viewpoints, that strikes me as neither transparent nor democratic.

Somehow, the years of Israeli brutal occupation of Gaza and its military and economic control of it which has not at all stopped after Israel's so called "withdrawal"; and the 75-and-counting years of Israeli settler colonialism are conveniently omitted in the requests like this, to focus on what has "triggered" the war, as if the trigger happened in a vacuum.
No, I do not excuse Hamas or what happened in October. However, I do think Israel is a violent settler colonial state, ejoying international immpunity- for a very long time and especially in the last 3 months. Yes, the attack on Israelis on the 7th of October is beyond horrific and like many other people with Jewish/Israeli connections, I mourn every child, elder, family assaulted or displaced. But no, this does not excise the wipe out of lives, hopes, schools, hospitals, doctors, journalists in Gaza- not in the last three months and not before- and its a great shame to any Jewish person to allow this to be done in their name. But sometimes, it seems to me, that I care more about the hungry and futureless kids in Gaza, than the Western Pro-Palestinians protesters who, in fact, work hard to allow the continuation of Hamas control there. Especially as every university in Gaza had been partially or fully destroyed, hundreds of professors and academics have been killed, and academic institutions outside Gaza have engaged in targeting and suppression of pro-Palestine speech, I am fully supportive of an academic boycott and a clear stance of public solidarity and action. Also interested in any research efforts to better understand internet research in the Palestinian context.
Given the online and livestreamed nature of this genocide where we've seen people telling us the horrific atrocities committed against them in real time on all our internet platforms, often followed by news of their murder, it is imperative for an association of internet researchers to take a stance.
Not to mention the nature of online suppression, disinformation, doxxing, and harassment that has been at the center of a campaign to justify and even celebrate the murder of over 30,000 people and the forced starvation and displacement of millions amidst an intentional destruction of lifesaving healthcare and telecommunication (including internet) facilities.

Of course, I am aware that academic organisations will not often respond to international events. Perhaps the silence so far is entirely for this reason. Perhaps we are afraid that if we speak up on this we will also be asked to speak about Sudan, Congo, and other issues (would that be terrible?)
However, I think that we must also acknowledge the chilling effect that many academics and others experience specifically on the matter of Israel.

I understand that many people do not want to contribute to the real antisemitism faced by our friends, colleagues, and students face. We all have a duty to oppose antisemitism in our communities and universities. Perhaps that leads to a reluctance to speak out about the Israeli state?s actions. However, I believe that we can oppose both antisemitism and Israeli state violence.
