request: free nvivo equivalent
Hi all.. we need to do some analysis of qualitative data (interviews and observation documents in MS word) we recently collected. We are looking for a free nvivo equivalent software to use to analyse our data as financial resources for this project are limited. any recomendations? thanks in advance... Panayiotis

Hi was going to suggest a search at www.sourceforge.org a good open source software repository until I realised sourceforge has very little academic tools software. I would hope some academics with programming skills would start to make some software at sourceforge and fix this problem. My own programming skills can not do this as I only really do html these days and only programmed before there were gui's and have not made the jump to mouse and window software programming. In short, I haven't yet found a free or open equivalent. But you may find either or both of these interesting/useful for your purpose: Ames, S. L., P. E. Gallaher, P. Sun, S. Pearce, J. B. Zogg, B. R. Houska, B. C. Leigh, and A. W. Stacy. "A Web-Based Program for Coding Open-Ended Response Protocols." Behavior Research Methods 37, no. 3 (2005): 470-479. "The coding program is housed on a Linux server and is implemented with PHP and MySQL. It is optimized for use with the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser and may be accessed at http://ipr1.hsc.usc.edu/codedemo/. The program is password protected, and visitors may log on using "admin" as both the username and password to test the application." and a pretty comprehensive coverage of Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) tools here: http://onlineqda.hud.ac.uk/ Cheers, James On Apr 1, 2006, at 3:47 PM, Peter Timusk wrote:

Answr (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/software/answr.htm) is a good free package developed by the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention in the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. It has rich functionality, but uses slightly different model/metaphor of the research process and the organisation of the data. Panayiotis Zaphiris wrote:
