role playing in MUDs
Dear all, I'm starting to study the role palying in MUDs. Do you know if there are some interesting MUDs to visit? And do you know if there are some studies on this topic? thank you very much lella
Ragnhild Tronstad's Ph.D. thesis is on MUDs and theatricality: Tronstad, Ragnhild. _Interpretation, Performance, Play & Seduction: Textual Adventures in 'Tubmud'_. Ph.D., University of Oslo 2004. Oslo: Unipub, 2004. --anders Anders Fagerjord, Ph.D. Associate Professor Department of Media and Communication University of Oslo
I've been working on and off on text based MOOs alone and in my classes in relation to production of cyberselves - mostly on Lingua MOO and PMC2 MOO (I used to work with Media MOO as well - http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~asb/MediaMoo/) http://lingua.utdallas.edu http://www.pmcmoo.org:7788/ There is a body of writing on MOOs (several of the researchers - Sunden, Kolko... and so on are probably on this list actually) - I can dig up my biblio and email it to you off list. r

What angle are you coming at this from? There are things like: Montola, M (2005) Designing Goals for Online Role-Players, DiGRA 2005 Conference Proceedings, Available from: www.gamesconference.org/digra2005/papers/25d0b608d44183e4550c06b5869d.do c Which splits play goals into endogenous, exogenous and digetic and applies this to all kinds of role play settings, hence would be applicable to MUDs. Or are you looking for more ethnographic work? Hi Lella This is actually getting to be a pretty rich field. A good place to start to aquaint yourself with the leading research and researchers in the field is the group blog site, Terra Nova: http://terranova.blogs.com I work with about a dozen people here in Montreal who focus on game studies, through the Montreal GameCODE project, spearheaded by Dr. Bart Simon. You can find out who's who through the website at (www.gamecode.ca -- though note the site is a bit out of date right now, I'm working on fixing that). Also, as previously suggested, DiGRA is a great place to go, especially in light of the most recent DiGRA conference from Vancouver. Hi Lella, I would have a look at Elaine Raybourn's Dissertation from 1998. An Intercultural Computer-Based Multi-User Simulation Supporting Participant Exploartion of Identity and Power In a Text-Based Networked Virtual Reality: DomeCity MOO http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=335915 I would also recommend that you join the DiGRA group. DiGRA 2005 in Vancouver rocked this year. Phillip 2005/9/29, Antonella Mascio <mo10861@iperbole.bologna.it>:

Lella, you may want to check out the work by two early researchers of social interaction in MUDs and MOOs: Diane Schiavo and Sonja Utz. Examples: Schiano, D. J. (1997).
