Re: [Air-L] Work on Qualitative internet research
Hi Nadia Here are some books that I used recently and I found them useful, McKee is definitely a good start, also Markham & Baym as a good start. Das, M., Ester, P. & Kaczmirek, L. (2011). Social and behavioral research and the internet: advances in applied methods and research strategies. New York: Routledge. Dillman, D. A. Smyth, J. D. & Christian, L. M. (2009). Internet, mail, and mixed-mode surveys: the tailored design method. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley & Sons. Herring, S. C. (2004). Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis: An Approach to Researching Online Behavior. In S. A. Barab, S. A, Kling, R. & Gray, J. H. (eds.) Designing for Virtual Communities in the Service of Learning. New York: Cambridge University Press, 338-376. Jones, S. (1999). Doing Internet research: critical issues and methods for examining the Net. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications. Markham, A. N. & Baym, N. K. (2009). Internet inquiry: conversations about method. Los Angeles, CA: Sage Publications. Murthy, D. (2008). Digital ethnography: An examination of the use of new technologies for social research. Sociology, 42(5), 837-855. Hi, Nadia,
I second Todd's recommendation. You might also enjoy Bonnie Brennan's recent methods book: Qualitative Research Methods for Media Studies.
Lindlof & Taylor's book, Qualitative Communication Research Methods, is my favorite methods text.
Hope this helps, Peter

Can't go wrong with Alan McKee's "Textual Analysis: a Beginner's Guide." There are additional, more specific texts too, but I feel like reading and grasping Alan's book first will be a godsend for you.

Hello fellow AOIR members,
This is my first post. My Name is Nadia and I am a recent MA graduate from the University of Calgary's Department of Communication and Culture. I am in process of developing my PhD proposals and I was wondering if you could recommend any articles or books on qualitative textual analysis of online texts. My proposed research will focus on online English-Language Jihadist media (mostly pulled from archives).
Thanks in advance!
