Invitation to interdisciplinary PhD program in Hawaii
Aloha Air-L Colleagues and Students, We invite applications to the Communication and Information Sciences PhD program at the University of Hawaii. Founded in 1986, this is one of the first interdisciplinary programs of its kind in the country. It is sponsored by four units across three colleges: Information and Computer Sciences (College of Natural Sciences) the School of Communications and department of Library and Information Science (College of Social Sciences), and Information Technology Management (College of Business). The program is structured for interdisciplinary experience across these fields. Curricular focus areas and faculty research expertise currently include Communication & Information Theories, Community Engagement, Data Science, Digital Business Transformation, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Policy & Planning, and Social Informatics (including Social Media studies). Applicants must have a Master's degree in one of the above fields or a related field. Please see https://www.hawaii.edu/cis/, in particular the Prospective Students section. Applications are due February 1st for fall admissions. Applicants will be considered for a program support graduate assistant position, which provides a stipend, tuition waiver and benefits. Additionally, CIS students often find teaching assistantship positions in the constituent departments (see links below). Some international students receive support from the East-West Center, https://www.eastwestcenter.org/ (which has a deadline approaching: apply to them ASAP). Students interested in a more technical degree might also consider the ICS Computer Science graduate programs (https://www.ics.hawaii.edu/academics/graduate-programs/). Students who have not yet earned an MS might consider the ICS MS program, Communications or other programs in the new School of Communication and Information (https://sci.manoa.hawaii.edu/programs/), Information Technology Management (https://shidler.hawaii.edu/itm/about), or Library and Information Science (https://www.hawaii.edu/lis/). Best wishes to all for the holidays!
