While I don't intend to start an AOIR love-fest, having returned from my first AOIR event, I wanted to congratulate the "Internet Generations" conference team for a job well-done in producing a rather interesting conference in Chicago. Lots of good items discussed and I came away with some useful food-for-thought. Looking forward to next year in Australia! Cheers, and thanks again, Rick Forno -infowarrior.org - Internet Studies, Curtin University of Technology
Dear Air-ers - Regarding AoIR follow-up I thought perhaps the comments from Matt Allen were quite pertinent and realized that only those at the meeting might have heard them. In further discussion of how to sponsor more graduate students to the meetings (always a worry) Matt raised an excellent point: Putting together ALL of our extra funds that could be solicited from members' generousity would only support airfare for one or (at most) two graduate students. Matt pointed out that by moving the conference AROUND the world, AoIR has facilitated the attendance and participation of many more graduate students in the conference vicinity than could be supported by a fellowship/scholarship/sponsorship. My contribution at the meeting was that the conference registration form could include a $10 or $25 dollar button for donations to graduate students or prizes. Also a button for purchase of a tee shirt, giving the exec some heads-up about tee shirt numbers. Ok, I know that all of these things take effort and time and especially an expenditure for those who are thinking of attending in Australia. I'm excited to see AoIR come to Australia and I hope many members make the jump and come and see us 'down under.' Cheers, Denise Denise N. Rall, Ph.D. submitted for review, School of Environ. I think the click on donation is key. as a lifetime member award winner, I'm going to join Monica and others in contributing what would have been my annual dues to the graduate student fund. It might take us a few years, but if people contribute money explicitly for this purpose, we can in the end create some sort of annuity that either sustains the graduate student award system or expands it. I also agree with Denise, Matt's points are a key strategy and Denise's idea is a way to get things done in the long term. On Oct 25, 2005, at 6:42 PM, Denise N. Rall wrote:

Dear all each year Curtin University offers several research fellowship positions across the university. These positions are always highly competitive: as well as 3 years fulltime research, there are options to extend for another 2 and then convert to a tenurable position. Some research funding is also provided. The closing date is 16 December. For more information: http://research.curtin.edu.au/fellowships/index.html I am seeking interest from air-listers who might want to apply for one of these positions, and come and work in Internet Studies with us. We've been very close now two years in a row to getting one of these fellowships in our area and I am thinking it is third time lucky :). Anyone interested in applying should contact me directly, and immediately for advice on the application process. Hi Matt, I'm getting ready to revise and update my application. My question is: do you think its still competitive (as you remember it), given the recent interest you may have received from other aoir members? just curious and seeking your advice, annette p.s. by the way, i like the way you are leading aoir and i'm really happy to see it all coming together in such an active and organized way. Great job! On 10/25/05, Matthew Allen <M.Allen@exchange.curtin.edu.au> wrote:

Thank you Jeremy . This is a wonderful tought and a great action of yours :) I am learning how to develop (smile) "the Murero's found for students and researchers with no money " :-) But please, do not come to me and ask for money, because I have not anymore!! I will do my best to convince the exec and AoIR to destinate a generous amount EVERY year to the found :-)) Being the new Treasurer, I hope I can be persuasive and convince that great group of people (...see, I am working here :-) ! There are many creative ways to make MORE people access the conference like rotate venues, and also negotiating affordable hotels deals, or flight+hotel stays, a direction I am working towards at the moment within the exec, as promised at the AGM. I plan to organize some fund raising as well. I will be back as soon as I learn how to do it in practice ;-) ...now dealing with the international bureaucracy... I guess I will be back one of these years ! but we'll do it, I promise. Let's see together where this goes to...we really need *your help* to make it happen.
