Digital Video Recordings
Hi! We're thinking of using a digital video recorder to capture some group elearning sessions as part of an analysis on learners experiences. Has anyone had any experiences of relatively inexpensive digital video recorders? Any suggestions or recommendations would be welcome! Thanks, Alison Muirhead
I'm not sure what you mean here. Are you referencing a stand-alone recorder versus a camcorder? If so a computer with Premiere or FinalCut Pro would work - as well as the simpler editing tools - you can capture directly to the disk. You can also use an external hard-drive; they're rather cheap at the moment. If you're talking about camcorders, that's another issue. You might want to look at the ones recording mini-dvds, since they're ready for playback and editing on a computer. In any case I'd recommend the inexpensive Sonys or Canons - you can find something quite useful for under, say, $700. Or are you talking about recording directly from the screen? I like the canon optura line, i think they are down to around 499 now, and they do quite well. past that, before you buy somehting, check with your local comm departments and tech centers, because you can probably check out a very nice camera for cheaper than you can buy an cheap one. I use a Sony usually - but that is comparatively expensive (there might be cheaper models) and you dont need that much complexity for basic recording - our student tech center provides students with the canons and they use those when doing projects for my classes and I agree with Jeremy - they do quite well. Imovie is the easiest for simple editing and has a low learning curve for quicky projects. But Final Cut Express isnt so bad either - that's a little more complex. Depends on what level of complexity you require in your final product. Panasonic has (mini dv) cameras for even less (280, 360 ish) than the price of the canon optura line - but since I have tried that only a couple times I cant say how good it is yet - seems functional - again depends .... r
